By 1891 the family had moved to Springfield Terrace, Moldgreen, Huddersfield and Charles was still a corn miller. He died in 1900 in Moldgreen, Huddersfield, Yorkshire. The Holmes Family:- James Holmes was born about 1788 worked as a tanner at Nether Denby. On 11 April 1814 he married Elizabeth Hadfield in Cawthorne. Their children were:- William (27 June 1814), Joseph (c.17 October 1815 - possibly because he was not expected to live), Mary (26 February 1817), Martha (7 March 1819), Benjamin (13 August 1820) and the eldest four (except Joseph) were christened together in Denby on (c.14 September 1820 Denby) and also Henry (b.13 November 1822; c. 29 December 1822), Sarah (b.20 September 1824; c. 28 November 1824), Elizabeth Hadfield (c. 6 May 1827), Ellen (b.21 January 1829; c. 19 April 1829) and James Hadfield (b.30 March 1831; c. 29 May 1831; m. Ann Firth; d. 1904 In 1841 James (tanner) and Elizabeth lived in Nether Denby with William (tanner), Mary, Martha, Benjamin, Sarah, Elizabeth, Ellen and James. In 1844 Benjamin Holmes married Mary Windle, daughter of George Windle, a fancy weaver of Nether Denby. In 1848 Sarah married John Windle four years after her elder brother Benjamin Holmes had married John' s elder sister Mary Windle. Family relationships were very close-knit. John Windle and Sarah had three sons and three daughters. John Windle was a pattern maker and dyer and they lived in Nether Denby. In 1851 James (farmer of 103 acres employing 2 labourers) lived at Gunthwaite Hall with Elizabeth, William (farm labourer), Ellen, James H. (farm labourer) and Richard (b.1843; grandson) and a female servant. In 1861 James (farmer of 110 acres) and Elizabeth still lived at Gunthwaite Hall with their son James Hadfield Holmes and his wife Ann (b.1833) and their children James Albert (1858) and Mary Elizabeth (1860). Also living with the family were Tom Holmes (farm servant; 14; b. Ingbirchworth), Henry Ibbetsen (10; b. Farnley Tyas) and Jonathan Holmes (lodger; widower; 42). In 1871 James (farmer of 100 acres employing 3 boys) and Elizabeth lived with their son James H. and his wife Ann and their children Albert, Mary Elizabeth, Ellen (1863), Frederick (1865), Francs (1877) and Ernest (1879). They also had a male servant. James died in 1876 at the age of 88 and soon afterwards his widow, Elizabeth died at the age of 81. Now back to Benjamin Holmes and Mary Windle (b.1823 Denby). Their children were all born in Gunthwaite (except one):- Richard (1844), Rowena (1846), Martha Ellen (1847), Elizabeth (b.16 Feb.1850), James Arthur (b.7 Apr 1852), Emily (b.20 May 1854), Lucy Windle (b.9 Jan.1857), William (b.29 Jan.1859), John Benjamin (b.5 Feb.1861), Mary Louisa (b.7 July 1863 Mirfield)and Kate (b.21 Apr 1866; d.1870). All the children were christened in Denby and their father, Benjamin, was listed as a farmer/gardener of Gunthwaite Hall. In 1851 Benjamin (gardener of 3 acres employing 1 labourer) and Mary lived at Gunthwaite Hall with Rowena, Martha Ellen and Elizabeth and a nurse (Susannah Windle aged 14). In 1861 Benjamin lived next door to his father at Gunthwaite Hall. Benjamin (market gardener) and Mary lived with Rowena, Martha Ellen, Elizabeth, James Arthur, Emily, Lucy, William and John Benjamin. Benjamin also helped his brothers William and James Hadfield on their father's farm. In 1871 Benjamin was a gardener of 3 acres in Gunthwaite and he and Mary lived with Martha Ellen, Elizabeth, James Arthur, William, John Benjamin, Mary Louisa and a granddaughter, Sarah Ellen. In 1875 Martha Ellen married John Birks Smithson, a market gardener of Syke House, Denby. In 1876 James Arthur Holmes married Annie Moore. In 1878 Elizabeth Holmes married Ralph Smithson of Syke House, Denby who was also a market gardener like his elder brother (who had married Elizabeth's elder sister Martha Ellen). In 1881 Benjamin Holmes (farmer of 104 acres employing 1 man and 2 boys) and Mary lived at Gunthwaite Hall with their children William, John Benjamin and Mary Louisa (1863) and 2 male servants. He had taken over from his father at the farm. Next door lived James Arthur Holmes (who had taken over as market gardener) with his wife Annie (b.1856 Denby) and their children Mary Ellen (1877), James Benjamin (1878) and Frances Emily (1880). In 1887 Annie died at the age of 31. In 1891 Benjamin (farmer) and Mary lived with William, Mary and John Benjamin and a male servant. Next door lived James Arthur (widower; gardener) and his children James Benjamin, Frances Emily and Hugh (b.1883). In 1896 Benjamin died at the age of 75 and his widow, Mary, died in 1898 at the age of 74. Their son, James Arthur, died in 1900 at the age of 48. In 1901 James Benjamin Holmes (market gardener on his own account at home) lived at Gunthwaite Hall with his sister Frances Emily and his brother Hugh. Next door were his uncles William (and his wife Mary E.) and John Benjamin. Now back to Elliott... He died about 2001 in Shepley, Yorkshire. Spouse: Hilda BURDETT.
