She lived in Penistone Union Workhouse, Penistone, Yorkshire in 1891. The Penistone Poor Law Union was formed on 27th July 1849. For its first ten years, the new union operated without a workhouse. Then in 1859 a new workhouse was built on a sloping site at the west side of Huddersfield Road to the north of Penistone. The architects were Henry F Lockwood and William Mawson. The porter's lodge, board room, master's office, bed-sitting rooms for the resident porter and clerk, and a receiving ward were located in a building at the north-west of the site. This is where the three children were received. The main building had a cruciform layout with an octagonal hub with short wings. Males were accommodated at the west, and females at the east. George went one way and the girls went the other. The rear wing contained the dining room and kitchen. Day rooms and the laundry block were located behind. An isolation hospital stood at the east of the site and a small mortuary at the north. A vagrants' block lay along the roadside at the west, with a piggery situated to the south. Much of the workhouse grounds were cultivated as a kitchen garden to grow food for use in the workhouse. In 1871, the workhouse accommodated 95 inmates including 41 males and 29 females aged over sixteen, 17 boys and 8 girls. At the 1881 census, there were 97 in residence plus 14 vagrants and 5 staff - Master and Matron, porter, school teacher and nurse. In 1891 there were 53 adults and 16 children under 14 and 6 staff. She died of a coma and diabetes on 3 Mar 1950 in Ingbirchworth, Yorkshire. She was described as suffering from diabetes. As there was no free health care Norah's diabetic problems were a drain on the family resources as doctors had to be paid. The children remember many times when the bills could not be paid in full. They also had a daughter Lily aged 4 and Mary's sister Clara Shaw (b1888, Hoylandswaine) lived with them.
The relationship with Walter is, as yet, unproven.
The Shaw Family:- Clara and Mary were two of the children of John Shaw (b.1851 Barnsley) and Nancy Fisher (b.1855 Tankersley; m. 1876). Their children were Mary Ann (1877), Lily (1881), Florence Annie (1883), John William (1885) and Clara (1887) - all born at Hoyland Common, Silkstone.
In 1881 John (coal miner) and Nancy lived at Stead Lanes, Hoyland with Mary Ann.
In 1891 John (coal miner) and Nancy lived at Naylor's Yard, Hoyland Nether with Mary, Lily, Florry, John and Clara. There is no obvious link to Walter or his wife Sarah.
John's mother was Sarah Oxterby (c.18 April 1819 St. Mary's Church, Barnsley; parnets Thomas and Anne; siblings George (1816), John (1823), Anne (1823) and William (1826)). Sarah Oxterby had married Frederick Shaw in 1838 in Barnsley but curiously he had always been absent on census night.
In 1841 at Westgate, Barnsley Sarah Shaw (head of household) and her son Thomas (b.1840) had lived with her brother George Oxterby and her sister Ann.
In 1851 Sarah (married; bobbin winder) had lived at School Street, Barnsley with her children Thomas (10), James (5) and John (2 months) and her sister Ann Oxterby (27; invalid).
In 1852 Frederick died.
In 1861 at 19 Westgate, Barnsley lived Sarah Shaw (linen winder; widow) and Thomas (coal miner, James (slater) and John.
In 1866 Sarah Shaw married a younger man, Samuel Wood.
In 1871 at 10 School Street lived Samuel Wood (35; roper) and his wife Sarah (53) and her children James Shaw (coal miner), John Shaw (coal miner) and two lodgers. Still no clue as to the link to Walter Hepplestone or his wife! Parents: Mary HEPPLESTONE.

William HEPPLESTONE was born on 13 Feb 1847 in Hoylandswaine, Yorkshire. He was christened on 20 Apr 1851 in Silkstone, Yorkshire. William and Elizabeth Heppenstall (Mary's illegitimate children) were christened at the same time as their aunts, Sarah and Amelia (daughters of Joseph (nailer) and Ruth. In 1861 he was a Pit Boy in Silkstone, Yorkshire. As in so many parts of the South Yorkshire Coalfield, coal was dug from shallow pits and drifts from the very early 1800’s and almost certainly earlier. By the middle of the century a number of families had been involved for some years, working the shallow outcrops of Guider (or Guyder) Bottom. Others were mining elsewhere in small operations so much so that by 1861, as many as 66 miners were listed in the Census. There are a number of sites of shallow workings and ‘day holes’ (worked as one shift during daylight hours) in and around the village – some of them in operation until late in the19th century. In 1861 William Hepplestone (14; errand boy; b.Hoylandswaine) was also enumerated in Thurlstone Bank, Thurlstone at the home of Thomas Greensmith (26; grocer and draper shopkeeper for the Co-operative stores) and his wife Betty (22) and their children Arthur (3) and Ada Ann (11months). Perhaps he was doing an extra job at the weekends to earn money. He lived in Coates Green, Oxspring, Yorkshire in 1871. In 1871, William was a lodger with the Innkeeper, John Thawley, and his family. In 1871 he was a Coal Miner in Thurgoland, Yorkshire. In 1884 he was a Coal Miner in Silkstone, Yorkshire. He died of 'probably disease of the chest' on 26 Nov 1884 in Black Horse Yard, Silkstone Common, Silkstone, Yorkshire. The cause of death was arrived at after an Inquest on 29th November 1884. Parents: Mary HEPPLESTONE.

They lived in South Yorkshire Buildings, Silkstone Common, Silkstone, Yorkshire in 1881. Soon afterwards the family moved to Wigan where Norah was born in 1882. They then moved back to Silkstone where Lydia was born in 1884. Was William too ill to work by this time? In the November of 1884 he died. After William's death Mary had obviously fallen on hard times. She had a family of seven children. George, Norah and Lydia went in the Workhouse. By 1891, Joseph and Jane were working and lived with relatives in Yorkshire. Mary Ann and her children Benjamin and Mary Elizabeth went to Wigan. It is there that Mary's illegitimate daughter Catherine was born in 1889. Mary Ann's mother was a Dunstan and she certainly had to rely on family for help with her children. She then had another two daughters within two years.
Joseph and Norah went to live with their mother's brother Joseph Whittaker. Family relationships were rather complicated as Joseph Whittaker's wife, Kate, was her father (William Hepplestone's) sister Kate Hepplestone (b1869).
