In 1901 William (stone carver on his own account) and Ruth lived at 12 Woodville Road, Wood Green with their children Alice, Albert (stone carver), Frederick (stone carver) and Ernest. In 1923 Ruth (67) and her sister, Emily (60), were knocked down by a car in Wood Green. Ruth had a fracture to the base of her skull and died but, although severely injured, Emily Crowther recovered. The street was very dark and the car involved had two oil lamps and two electric headlights which worked on a dynamo. The driver was going at 8 to 10 miles per hour and the headlights showed objects at a distance of about two yards. The car driver was exonerated.
