The IGI records that Thomas (born 1759) died on 4 March 1766 but the descendants of a Thomas Burdett disputed this. However, the Bishops' Transcripts for Penistone shows "Tho: Sn: of Dally Rr: Burdett March 4" and although the print-out is almost blacked out, the other entries on the page are adult burials and, as another print-out from the BTs shows Thomas' christening, this is a record of his burial; so Thomas Burdett did not have any descendants. This has been a difficulty, solved by the research of another Burdett descendant. He died about 1766 in Denby, Yorkshire. Parents: Delariver BURDETT and Mary GAUNT. A tribute in the November 1912 edition of "The British and Foreign Confectioner and Baker" gives details of his business career. He initially worked for the firm of Messrs.Owen and Marriott, corn merchants."He was, as a youth, of an ambitious turn of mind, and, at the age of eighteen he showed such qualifications, including energy and pushfulness, that his firm offered him a position "on the road". He took kindly to this new occupation, and as years went on he began to see increasing possibilities. He met with success and in 1878 he commenced on his own account in conjunction with a friend." He lived in 4 Alexandra Grove, Chorlton, Manchester, Lancashire in 1881. Thomas was listed as the head of the household and his widowed mother lived with him. In 1881 he was a Corn Merchant in Chorlton, Manchester, Lancashire. "Good business was done during the partnership which lapsed by the effluxion of time at the end of ten years. Mr Burdett then commenced to score entirely off his own bat, and worked both Liverpool and Manchester districts with more than a degree of success." In 1891 he was a Commission Agent (commercial) in Chorlton, Manchester, Lancashire. In 1901 he was a Baker and Shopkeeper (employer) in Manchester, Lancashire. "After some time he showed a disposition to take things a little more easy, with the result that he gave up his business as a merchant and purchased, in 1900, the old-established Longsight Bakery. With the acquirement of this he brought into the fold of active baking operations two of his sons, but the lease of the Longsight premises expired in 1910, and fresh fields and pastures new were found in the populous and growing district of Levenshulme. Farmside Bakery and adjoining buildings were acquired, and such alterations were made as to bring them well within the designation of a thoroughly up-to-date bakery, with all its attendant facilities....... Mr. Thomas Burdett has the reputation of being a smart business man and an advanced thinker. He was always an ardent supporter of the technical education movement in the baking trade, and has encouraged it as much as possible. In fact, he has given much thought and consideration to other problems pertaining to the trade, and his services in furtherance of its general welfare have been marked with a decided frankness and, withal, good judgment. His efforts, though, are not confined to his own particular calling, for there are other spheres in which his talents are very usefully applied. Until a few years ago he was a member of the celebrated Halle Choir, to which he gave 25 years' service; he has a liking for foreign languages, having a good knowledge of French, Spanish and Italian; and he is an enthusiastic bowler, to which pastime he mainly attributes the good health which he enjoys. He has had many honours thrust upon him, and has had several invitations to become a municipal candidate, but, apparently, he has no ambition to join the band of civic fathers, for such invitations he has up to now declined with thanks. Reverting to his buiness again, he emphasised, in the course of his chat with our representative, the great change the Manchester baking trade has undergone during the last few years owing to the advent of several large factory bakers, which have undoubtably been the means of giving the quietus to dozens of the smaller bakers, and bringing about innumerable failures. Mr. Burdett is a trade union employer himself, but, he says, several large masters employ cheap, non-union labour, and thus make competition exceedingly fierce." He died in Jan 1914 in Manchester, Lancashire. He was buried in 1914 in Plot 890, Southern Cemetery, Manchester, Lancashire. Parents: Thomas BURDETT and Ann BOWKER. Spouse: Mary BARROW.
