The Workhouse at Denby was converted from a farm building owned by Jonathan Shaw in 1827. It was in Gunthwaite Lane and was part of a small holding called Robinson Lathe. In 1834 the Poor Law Commissioners found that there was room for twenty paupers but that the highest number that there had been at any one time was seven.
An inventory of the "goods and other property belonging to the Township of Denby in the Workhouse taken this 14th day of June 1839" showed that the furniture comprised "3 stools, 1 round table, 1 night chair and tin, 2 small chains, 1 flaskett, 1 tub and maden, 3 old chains, 2 chests, 5 bedsteads and cords, 2 boxes, 4 beds, 12 blankets, 6 sheets, 7 coverlids, 4 long bolsters and cases, 1 posnet, 2 lamb skins, 1 stort pillow, 5 spoons, 3 towels, 4 knives and two forks, coal rake, tongs and poker. Clothing - 4 new night capes."
There were six paupers listed in the 1841 Census. None was listed by the 1851 Census and so we can presume that they had been moved to Netherfield as the Penistone Union was formed in 1849 to care for the poor.
