In 1881 they lived in Low Street, Swainby with Robert and Joseph (ironstone miner) and Isabella lived with Thomas and George Edwin (1871). Hannah (1832) married John Mellor in 1859. She already had three illegitimate children - Edward (1850), Charlotte (1857) and Rachel (1860). From 1861 onwards John and Hannah lived in Greenside, Hoylandswaine. In 1861 John was a coal miner and their children were Edward, Charlotte and Rachel Armitage and Finetta Mellor (1861). They later had William (1865), John (1867), Mary (1870), George (1871) and Walter (1874). In 1871 John was a fireman at the iron and steel works and in 1881 he was an ironstone miner. In 1871 Edward and Charlotte were enumerated as Armitage but Rachel was enumerated as MELLOR with a note to the effect that she was the daughter of John Mellor (as were the younger children). George (1835) married a widow, Hannah Eden (b.1840 Bransdale) in Stockton in 1874 and from then until at least 1901 they lived in Potto, Yorkshire. In 1881 they lived with Benjamin Eden (b.1870 Potto) and John Henry Nicholson (b.1876 Stockton, Durham; adopted son). In 1871 Hannah had lived with her husband, John Eden, and their sons John Henry (1866) and BENJAMINE (1870) in Potto but John and John Henry had died within a short time of each other in 1871. It is obvious that the enumerator doubted whether Thomas and Frances were actually married as he added question marks by each of the words "married". No marriage record has yet been found. In 1881 Thomas and Frances lived at Mustard Hill with their four eldest children. In 1891 Tom (coal miner) and Fanny lived in Mustard Hill with their children Sarah Ann (box marker), Martha (box marker), Joseph and Tom. In 1901 THOS (coal hewer) and Frances still lived in Mustard Hill with their children Sarah Ann, Martha (french polisher), Joseph (coal hewer) and Thomas. Now back to John....
