The Bell Family:- Thomas and Elizabeth had married in All Saints' Church, Silkstone on 25 April 1836. Both were "of this parish" and the marriage was after Banns. Their children were Joseph (b.1837: c. 26 March 1837 Silkstone), Hannah (1839), James (1841), John (1843), Jane (1845), Thomas (b.1847; c. ( May 1847 Wortley, near Penistone), Samuel (1849), George (1851) and Ruth (b.1853; c. 29 May 1853). In 1841 Thomas and Elizabeth lived with their children Joseph, Hannah and James in Bromley, Wortley where Thomas was a coal miner. In 1851 Thomas and Elizabeth still lived with their children Hannah, James, John, Jane, Thomas, Samuel and George in Bromley, but Thomas was now an iron stone miner. Jmaes too worked as a gin driver and iron miner at the age of 10. In 1858 Hannah had an illegitimate daughter, Annie Elizabeth Bell, who was christened in Wortley on 4 July 1858 but Hannah died the next year. In 1861 Thomas and Elizabeth still lived in Bromley with their children John, Jane and Ruth. Thomas was still an iron stone miner and John was a blacksmith.
Now getting back to James....
In 1871 James Bell was a 30 year old married (?) blacksmith who was a boarder at 95 Kimberworth Road, Masbrough, Rotherham at the home of a widow, Hannah Allwood, a dressmaker, and her daughters Emma (27) and Eliza (26), who were also both dressmakers. Hannah (nee Butterworth) and her husband William (a journeyman joiner) had lived in the same place since 1851 but by 1861 Hannah was a widow and she and her daughters Emma and Esther (1850) were dressmakers. They took in a lodger, James, and in 1872 he married Emma Allwood (b.1843 Rotherham) in Sheffield. They lived in Rotcher, Thurlstone in 1881 with their children Albert Henry (1874 Sheffield), Emily Ada (1877 Sheffield), Lilian (1878 Thurlstone) and Mary Alice (1884 Thurlstone). James was a blacksmith. Eliza Allwood (b.1844 Rotherham: Emma's sister) was staying with the family. She was a dressmaker. Another son, Fred was born in 1883 and in 1891 the family lived at Knuckle o' th' Hill, Thurlstone. Emma was enumerated as EMILY. The daughter, Emily, was an umbrella maker in the local factory. Emma died in 1896 at the age of 53 and James decided to remarry. In 1901 he was a Blacksmith Tool Smith in Penistone, Yorkshire. He died about 1910.
