John THICKETT was born about 1832 in Bradfield, Yorkshire. The Thickett family had lived in the Bradfield/Penistone area for generations. Today the hamlets are called Upper Midhope and Midhopestones, the latter having reference to the stepping or leaping-stones by which the people crossed the river at the ford near Dike-Side Farm, a site now submerged in the Underbank Reservoir, completed in 1907. Originally they were known as Over Midhope and Nether Midhope respectively.
John's parents were Thomas Thickett (1793-1879) and Ann Grayson (1802-1864). Ann had had a son, Thomas Thickett Grayson on 22 December 1823 (c.15 January 1824 in Penistone) and the name suggests that it is likely that he was Thomas Thickett's son and he was certainly brought up as the eldest in the family.
Thomas and Ann had married on 25 July 1824 in Ecclesfield and their children were:- Eliza (c.8 January 1826); Joel (c.16 March 1828), Caroline (c.21 March 1830); John (c.27 Aug 1832); Mary (c.22 April 1835), Henry (c.25 September 1836); Edward (c.2 June 1839) and Charles (c.5 December 1841) - all were christened at Midhope.
In 1841 Thomas was a cordwainer and he and Ann lived in Midhope with their children Thomas (apprentice cordwainer), Caroline, John, Henry and Edward.
In 1851 Thomas THICKET (transcribed as SHICKEL; shoemaker employiong one journeyman) and Mary lived in Midhope with John and Charles and their married daughter Caroline Howe and her husband William and daughter Sarah Ann.
In 1864 Ann died.
In 1871 Thomas was the head of the household and his son John and family lived with him.
Family sources say that Thomas was a originally a potter. In the very early 18th century there were only a small number of cottages and farms in Midhopestones. However it was in 1720 that George Walker & Robert Blackburn leased a parcel of land known as Nether-Mill-Green, containing 70 yards by 40 yards on which to build a Pot-House. In 1727 William Gough built the ovens and sheds which were required, and some dwelling houses, all this became known as "Pot House Fold". The type of earthenware made at Midhope Potteries was called slip ware and consisted of meeas-pots, or porringers, bottles of all kinds, jars large and small, dishes basins, pancheons, cups and saucers plates, stew-pots, butter-pots, water pots, bread-pots, chimney-pots etc. Some of the more classical pieces were decorated with marbled patterns, stripes and floral, some bore grotesque figures of birds & animals, initials of persons and dates when they were made. One of the artists was a man by the name of Greaves. The Midhope Potteries were in existence at least between 1720 and 1828. For many years Midhopestones was well known for its pottery, all locations of this seem to have disappeared over the years although there is a Potters Well with an information board giving its history. Now back to John Thickett... He was christened on 27 Aug 1832 in Midhope, Yorkshire. Between 1861 and 1891 he was a Shoe Maker in Bradfield, Yorkshire. He died about 1898 in Midhopestones, Bradfield, Yorkshire.
