In spite of the fact that all the people in the household were emumerated as Rayner, Caroline Simpson did not marry Thomas Rayner until 1858 by which time she had had eight illegitimate children. The eldest four were by father/s unknown and it is likely that the youngest four were not Thomas Rayner's as they were all known as Simpson later in life. As well as seven of their children and a grandson, Ernest (b.1899 Penistone) there were also three servants and forty three lodgers from all over the country. It must have been quite a profitable business but "fairly cosy" for the lodgers. He died about 1912 in Penistone, Yorkshire.
