He died of paralysis and old age on 16 Mar 1858 in Upper Midhope, Hoylandswaine, Yorkshire. Joseph and his wife adopted their grandson Benjamin after the death of their daughter-in-law Martha Silverwood. Hannah and Martha were also second cousins.
