He and Martha lived with Matilda, Wilson, Kate, Jane, Laura, Clara, Edith, William Herbert and Gertrude. They lived in David Lane, Dewsbury, Huddersfield, Yorkshire between 1881 and 1891. In 1881 he and Martha lived with Kate, Clara, Edith and William Herbert. In 1891 Edith, William Herbert and Gertrude were at home. Thomas was a widower but he lived with Mary (and her son Fred) and Eliza Heeley (his widowed daughter) and her sons Norris Heeley (b.1860) and Joe Heeley (b.1862) as well as his son George. He lived in Denby Dale, Yorkshire in 1881. Theophilus Senior was a widower and also at the house were Theophilus' grandson, Fred and his wife Martha and their two month old daughter Amy and one boarder as well as Theophilus' sister-in-law Hannah Burdett (b.1815).

Spouse: Henry HAYLES. Henry HAYLES and Mary Brinton SEYMOUR were married on 23 May 1850 in St John's Church, Oakfield, Ryde, Isle of Wight. Both were of full age and lived in Oakfield. Henry was a labourer as was his father William Hayles. Mary's father, George Seymour, was a mariner. Their witnesses were Sophia Hayles (Henry's sister) and Charles Guy. They lived in Cherry Gin, St. Helens, Ryde, Isle of Wight between 1851 and 1891. In 1851 Henry and Mary lived alone. In 1861 they had Henry, Mary and George and a lodger living with them. In 1861 they had Henry, Mary and Ellen living with them. In 1881 just William and Ellen were at home. In 1891 Henry and Mary had a granddaughter Grace Darling Allnutt (b.1884 Ryde; c. 28 December 1884 St John's Church, Oakfield, Ryde) staying. This child is a bit of a mystery as no birth record can be found. Her christening record states that she was the daughter of Alfred Allnutt and Grace. This was probably Ellen Emily Louisa's brother-in-law. Children were: Henry William HAYLES, Mary Elizabeth HAYLES, George Stephen HAYLES, Ellen Emily Louisa (Emily) HAYLES.

Giles SHAW was born about 1797 in Denby, Yorkshire. The Shaw Family:- Giles was probably the son of Giles Shaw and Bridget (nee Stanley). Giles (senior) was born at Denby in 1775, the son of John Shaw of Lower Denby and his wife Sarah. John and Sarah had at least seven sons (Samuel, John, George, James, Isaac b.1767, Giles b.1774 and Thomas) - all born at Denby. In John's will dated 27 September 1803 (proved 17 March 1804) he was described as a Farmer of Denby. He left the majority of his estate to his wife, Sarah, and his eldest son, Samuel. The other brothers had £10 each. His son, John, was left some coals which he was to sell and then the proceeds were to be divided among his brothers. To Giles he left a croft in Denby called Plumpton which was about 200 square yards in size.
Giles and Bridget married at Penistone on 26 June 1797. Bridget (b.1770) was the daughter of Benjamin Stanley and his wife Elizabeth/Betty (nee Butterworth) of Oxspring Mill. Benjamin and Elizabeth had married at Silkstone in 1767 and Benjamin owned Oxspring Mill as his father Martin had before him. Giles and Bridget had at least five children (George/Giles b.1797, Charles b.1800, Charlotte b.1803, Elizabeth b.1805 and John b.1809). Bridget died on 4 January 1810 and was buried at Penistone. She was 39 but her age was wrongly recorded as 49.
In 1841 Giles (junior) was of independent means and had Elizabeth Bakehouse, aged 10, living with him at Penistone Bridge. By 1851 Giles was a widower with a private occupation/Lodging House Keeper and there were two visitors
The Shaws were obviously a close knit family as Giles' daughter, Elizabeth married a Benjamin Shaw, a shoe maker (b.1806 Penistone) by banns at Penistone Church on 17 February 1829 and then was housekeeper between 1851 and 1871 for her uncle Isaac and then her cousin John at the 100 acre farm at Cat Hill, Hoylandswaine. In 1861 she also had her son, Herbert (b.1842 Penistone) living with her and in 1871 he was a labourer on the farm and her grandson, Stanley (b.1858 Sheffield) was also at the farm. Elizabeth died in 1877, a year after her husband Benjamin's death. Giles Junior married Elizabeth Walshaw. Between 1820 and 1841 he was a Weaver in Ingbirchworth, Yorkshire. About 1845 he was a Fancy Weaver in Ingbirchworth, Yorkshire. In 1851 he was a Weaver in Stayley, Cheshire. Between 1861 and 1866 he was a Power Loom Cotton Weaver in Stayley, Cheshire. He died of Paralysis (certified) on 9 Apr 1866 in 4 Cross Leech Street, Duckinfield, Cheshire. In 1861, a grandson John Shaw was living with them. He had been born in 1854 in Stayley (mother unknown).

Spouse: Elizabeth (Betty) WALSHAW. Giles SHAW and Elizabeth (Betty) WALSHAW were married on 22 Feb 1819 in All Saints' Church, Silkstone, Yorkshire. They were both "of this parish" and married after Banns. The witnesses were Thomas Outram and Thomas Hudson. They lived in Ingbirchworth, Yorkshire in 1841. They lived in James Hall's Houses, Stayley, Cheshire in 1851. They lived in 19 Grove Road, Stayley, Cheshire in 1861. Jane SHAW was born on 26 May 1852 in Thurlstone, Yorkshire. She died on 2 Feb 1936 in 15,Talbot Road, Penistone, Yorkshire. She signed a will. In her will Jane left everything to be divided equally between her surviving children. The Lodging House was being run by her son, Arthur. After her husband's death in 1912 several of Jane's children emigrated to Canada and Jane made several trips to see them. Her old sea trunk which she took with her still exists. Parents: Joseph SHAW and Mary MATTHEWMAN.

Spouse: James SIMPSON. James SIMPSON and Jane SHAW were married about 1869 in Netherfield Independent Chapel, Penistone, Yorkshire. No father's name was entered on the marriage certificate. Joseph SHAW was christened on 20 May 1820 in St. Nicholas' Church, Cumberworth, Yorkshire. He was born about 1820 in Ingbirchworth, Yorkshire. In 1841 he was a Weaver in Ingbirchworth, Yorkshire. In 1845 he was a Labourer in Thurlstone, Yorkshire. He lived in Thurlstone, Yorkshire in 1845. In 1851 he was a Farm Labourer in Thurlstone, Yorkshire. In 1861 he was a Railway Labourer in Hepworth, Yorkshire. In 1871 he was a Labourer in Bridge End, Penistone, Yorkshire. Joseph was the Head of the Household and had 33 lodgers at the Lodging House which was emumerated afterwards. In 1881 he was a Labourer in a Corn Mill in Bridge End, Penistone, Yorkshire. There were 22 lodgers recorded in the "Licensed Lodging House" including John Matthewman (b. 1833 Langsett) and his wife Mary (b. 1833 Prestbury). It seems likely that John was Mary Shaw's relative. He died of Cancer of the Liver on 19 Jun 1889 in South Yorkshire Asylum, near Wadsley, Ecclesfield. He was admitted to the County Asylum on 6 January 1888 suffering from cancer of the liver. He was recorded as number 3078; aged 67; married; living at Thurlstone in the Penistone Union District; a Labourer at a Corn Mill; sent by J.C. Milner; medical certificate 6 January 1888 signed by A.C.J. Wilson. He had a form of mental disorder dignosed as melancholia. "He is depressed, miserable and with difficulty can be got to answer questions. He can't tell why he is so depressed. Supposed cause of insanity: not known; in feeble boldily health. He is very stout, fat, flabbily built. Duration of existing attacks: several months; observations by J.S.Nokes." He was buried about 1889 in St John the Baptist Church, Penistone,Yorkshire. Also recorded on the gravestone are Mary and Jane, their daughter. On 15 October 1892 Administration of the estate was granted to his daughter, Jane Simpson. Maria SHAW was born about 1823 in Ingbirchworth, Yorkshire. She was christened on 20 Jul 1823 in St. Nicholas' Church, Cumberworth, Yorkshire. Parents: Giles SHAW and Elizabeth (Betty) WALSHAW.


Martha SHAW was born about 1859 in Hepworth, Yorkshire. Parents: Joseph SHAW and Mary MATTHEWMAN.


Mary SHAW was born about 1862 in Penistone, Yorkshire. She married John Stevenson in 1880 and their children were:- Ellen (1882 Penistone), Alice (1884 Workington) and Joseph (1890 Penistone). In 1891 Mary was noted as married but no husband was with her. She was living with her widowed mother at Bridge End, Penistone and she was employed as a servant. Her three children were also there. In 1901 Mary and Joe lived at 63 High Street, Penistone and they had a lodger. Parents: Joseph SHAW and Mary MATTHEWMAN.


Mary Ann SHAW was christened on 27 May 1822 in St. Nicholas' Church, Cumberworth, Yorkshire. She was born about 1822 in Ingbirchworth, Yorkshire. Parents: Giles SHAW and Elizabeth (Betty) WALSHAW.


Nathan SHAW was christened on 9 Jan 1825 in St. Nicholas' Church, Cumberworth, Yorkshire. He was born about 1825 in Ingbirchworth, Yorkshire. In 1841 he was an Agricultural Labourer in Ingbirchworth, Yorkshire. In 1851 he was a Stone Getter in Tommy Park, Hadfield, Derbyshire. By 1851 Nathan was married to Ann (b.1826 Newmill) and had two children George (b.1848) and Eliza (b.1850). Both were born in Waterside, Derbyshire. They had two boarders living with the family. Parents: Giles SHAW and Elizabeth (Betty) WALSHAW.


Rachel SHAW. Rachel was the daughter of John Shaw, Vicar of Rotherham. John was born in Bradfield on 23 June 1606 and died on 19 April 1672. He was a student at Cambridge at the same time as John Milton. He was a Puritan and became Vicar of Rotherham in 1639. During the Civil War he was an influential thinker for Parliament.
