The Roebuck Family William's great grandfather, Enoch Roebuck, was born in 1794 in Thurlstone (d.1865 Ingbirchworth). He had three siblings:- Hezekiah (1792-1859), Amos (1793-1867) and Ebeneezer (1799-1878). On 15 July 1817 he married Martha Turner (b.1797 Thurlstone; d.1874 Halifax). The marriage was by Banns and both were "of this parish". Enoch and Martha lived in Thurlstone, probably at the Top o' th' Town, and had ten children. All were dedicated at the Particular Baptist, Thurlstone. Their children were:- Clementina (1817), Elizabeth (1819), Hannah (1822), Amos (1824), Mary (1826), George (1829), Sarah (1832), Ruth (1834), Enoch (b.13 February 1837) and Henry (1839). From 1828 the Providence Particular Baptists met in a workshop behind some cottages at Top o' th' Town. Adult baptisms were performed in the stream and later in the River Don. In 1851 33 people attended morning worship, 37 came in the afternoon and 23 in the evening. In 1841 Enoch was a clothier at Town End, Thurlstone and Martha and all his children lived with him. George died in 1842. In 1851 Enoch and Martha still lived in Thurlstone, where Enoch was a woollen clothier. His children were: Amos (woollen weaver), Ruth (woollen weaver) and Enoch (woollen weaver) and there was also one male assistant woollen weaver and a female house servant. In 1861 Enoch and Martha lived at Town Street, Thurlstone and Enoch was a woollen hand loom weaver. He and Martha had their children Ruth and Henry at home and also a grandson, Enoch Roebuck Coldwell (b.1845 Thurlstone). (Enoch Roebuck Coldwell was the son of Elizabeth Roebuck (1819) who had married Joseph Coldwell (b.1818 Hepworth) in 1843. Joseph was a sawyer and later a woollen fulling miller in Thurlstone and he and Elizabeth had Hannah (1844), Enoch (1846), George (1848), Sarah (1849), Joseph (1851), Henry (1853) and Ruth (1859). Elizabeth died in 1871.Joseph Coldwell died in 1881 Enoch Roebuck died in 1865. On 7 March 1859 Enoch Roebuck (junior - transcribed as ENOCK) married Sarah Hanson (b.28 Feb 1835 Ingbirchworth; c.7 June 1835 Denby; youngest daughter of William Hanson and Elizabeth Burgess). Enoch and Sarah's children were:- Helen (19/08/1860-1861), Hanson (26/01/1862-1864), Phoebe (10/03/1865-1866), Turner (05/04/1867-1867), Emily (03/04/1868-1931), Oliver (19/01/1870-1895), Harry (11/03/1873) and Edwin (1877 Ingbirchworth-1951). In 1861 Enoch and Sarah lived at Top o' th' Town, Thurlstone with their daughter Helen. Enoch was a Woollen Hand Loom Weaver. In 1871 Enoch and Sarah lived at New Row, Thurlstone with Emily and Oliver and a boarder (Enoch's nephew) Enoch Roebuck Coldwell (1845 Thurlstone; Labourer at Steel Works). (NB Enoch Roebuck Coldwell (18145-1919 Milnsbridge) married Jane Battye (1853-1929) and they had one son.) In 1881 Enoch and Sarah lived in Ingbirchworth. Enoch was a grocer and draper.Their children, Emily, Oliver, Harry and Edwin, lived with them. In 1884 Enoch died. In 1891 Sarah was a widow but she still was a grocer and draper in Ingbirchworth and her children Emily, Oliver (a blacksmith), Harry (an apprentice joiner) and Edwin, lived with her. In 1901 Sarah lived alone in Ingbirchworth and she was a retired grocer. However she was not quite alone as next door was her daughter Emily (1868). She had married Charles William Knowles in 1892 and she and Charles lived with their children Ernest (1893), Henry (1896), Evelyn (1897) and George (1900). They had a female domestic servant and Charles was a relieving official. Sarah's son Oliver (1870) was a shoeing and jobbing smith and he lived at 2 Talbot Road, Penistone with his wife Alice Ann (nee Lockwood; b.1871 Hoylandswaine; m. 1895) and their children Enoch (1896) and Annie (1898). Her son Harry (1872) lived in Ingbirchworth and had taken over as grocer and joiner. He lived with his wife Jane (nee Hanson; b.1869 Ingbirchworth; m.1893) and their children Fred (1893) and Hanson (1899). Her youngest son Edwin (1872; a joiner) also lived in Ingbirchworth. He had married Mary Turner (aka Polly; 12/01/1880-1945) in 1897 and their children were: Turner (29/01/1898-1976; m. Mary Stafford), Cyril (1900-1905), Melvyn (1901-1973; m. Ethel Hassell and had two daughters), Sarah (1903-1976), Cyrilla (1905-1978; aka Lilla; m. George Couling and had one son), William (1907; see below), Oliver (1908-1981; m. Gladys Hanwell and had three children), Mary (05/07/1911-1981; aka Bunt; m. Edward Goodhead and had three sons), Ellen (1916; m. Oswald Goodhead), Emily (1916-1991; aka Pum) and Ernest (1920-19 Sep 1944; died in the Battle of Arnhem; in South Staffordshire Regiment (2nd Airbourne Battalion); bur. It must have been a labour of love to this old Cleveland Miner whose ecomomy of words in recording incidents is noteworthy. A great deal of the diary, records the deaths of friends, there are no exciting things, but then the life of a miner in a tiny community before the days of buses and pictures etc. was not likely to contain such things. Nevertheless it records the real stuff of life, births, marriages and deaths, which after all are the most important things!
