At 41 York Street, West Cowes were George Benton (29; carpenter and joiner) and his wife Susan (nee Abbott; 26) and their daughter Emily (2) and Susan's brother Thomas (mariner; 37) and his wife Jane (31) and Susan's brother Horatio (labourer; 29).
In 1871 Thomas was a relative (73; widower; mariner) living at 15 Western Shore, Southampton with his son Thomas (47; ship's steward) and Jane (41) and their daughter Emily (17) and another relative, Edward Morris (24; upholsterer's clerk).


William ABRAHAM was born about 1811 in Newport, Isle of Wight.

Edwin took over as a grocer and he and his family continued to live at 94 Pyle Street and the family grew with the addition of William (1872), Percy (1875-1875) and Amy May (1878).

Thomas ALLNUTT was born about 1861 in Marylebone, Middlesex. In 1861 Alfred was a coachman and one of the five servants to a household in Marylebone. In 1871 Alfred and Sarah lived at Rowborough Lane, Brading and they had six children - Thomas (1861), Henry (1862), Alfred (1864), William (1866), Alice Kate (1868) and Ellen (1870). Alfred was a coachman. Only Thomas married on the Isle of Wight and Alfred and Sarah were in Chelsea in 1881 with William, Alice, Ellen, John (1873) and Eliza (1874). In 1881 their son Henry was a domestic servant in Westminster and Alfred was a footman in Ryde. However there is the question of Grace Darling Allnutt (b.1884). It appears that Alfred was her father but she was brought up as the granddaughter of Henry Hayles and Mary Brinton Seymour. Who was her mother? In 1891 he was a Painter in St. Helen's, Ryde, Isle of Wight.

Thomas was 24 and Ellen Emily Louise was 20. Thomas was a clerk and his father Alfred Allnutt was a coachman. Ellen Emily Louise's father, Henry Hayles was a gardener. Their witnesses were Henry William Hayles (bride's brother) and Caroline Chidwick. They lived in Cherry Gin, St. Helens, Ryde, Isle of Wight in 1891. Thomas and Emily lived next to her parents with their four eldest children. They lived in 31 School Street, Oakfield, Ryde, Isle of Wight in 1901. The Mason Family:-
Alice's parents were John and Alice Mason. Their children were:- John (1840), Mary Ann Blackburn/Blackbourne (1842-1849), Alice (1845), William (1847), Edwin (1849) and Henry (1851).
In 1841 John (b.1803 Scarborough; labourer) and Alice Mason (b.1811 Maltby) lived at Long West Gate, Scarborough with their son John. They were to live in this house all their lives.
In 1851 John (coal porter) and Alice lived with John, Alice, Edwin and Henry.
In 1861 John (bricklayer's labourer) and ALACE were listed at the same address with John (ship wright), ALACE (servant) and Edwin. Next door lived Robert Normandale (mariner) and his wife, five children, granddaughter Emma (6) and two boarders. (The Normandales were close friends/relatives.) However, ALLICE Mason (b.1811 Amotherby) was also listed as visiting at Alma Street, Stranton, Durham. She was at the household of Joseph White (married; 31; quarryman; b. Scotland) and hs wife Jane (37; b. Scarborough). Also at the house were Augusta Hamilton (19; housemaid; b. Scarborough) and two boarders, Benjamin Normandale (married; 37; carpenter; b. Scarborough) and Elizabeth Bland (1; b. Durham).
In 1864 Alice Mason married Francis Anderson (b.1844 Scarborough).
In 1864 John Mason died.
In 1871 at Long West Gate, Scarborough Francis (fisherman) and Alice lived with her widowed mother, Alice Mason (b.1811 Amotherby, Yorkshire) and her brother, Edwin Mason (jet worker). Francis and Alice's children also lived with them - John (1864), Robert (1866 - his twin William had died soon after birth), George Henry (1869) and a day old female child. Also at the house were Benjamin Normandale (lodger; married; 48; ship's carpenter), Emma Normandale (niece; 17; domestic servant).
In 1872 Edwin Mason died at the age of 22.
In 1873 Francis Anderson was born to Francis and Alice.
In 1874 Francis Anderson died at the age of 29 and Alice was a widow
In 1881 Alice Mason (widow; lodging house keeper) still lived in Long West Gate with John Anderson (16; grandson; no occupation) and Francis Anderson (7). Her seven lodgers included Benjamin Normandale (married; 57; ship's carpenter; b. Scarborough). Another of Alice's sons, Robert Anderson (12), was an inmate at Castle Howard Reformatory School in Welburn in Malton, Yorkshire.
In 1888 Alice Mason died at the age of 73. Now back to Henry Hepplestone and Alice... They lived in 27 Cross Grove Street, Huddersfield, Yorkshire in 1881. Henry and Alice lived with her son George (b.1869; now known as Heppenstall), William and Joe. They lived in 26a Duke Street, Huddersfield, Yorkshire in 1891. HARRY HEPPENSTALL and Alice lived with William, Joe, Annie, Alice and Sarah. Also at the address were George Anderson (lodger; 19; labourer - Alice's son) and a widower who lodged with them and his two children. They lived in 19 Manchester Street, Huddersfield, Yorkshire in 1901. Henry and Alice lived with their children Joe, Annie, Alice and Sarah and a lodger. Children were: William HEPPLESTONE, Joe Edwin HEPPLESTONE, Annie HEPPLESTONE, Alice HEPPLESTONE, Sarah HEPPLESTONE.

In 1841 Stephen, Sarah, Elijah and the twins Sarah and Ruth lived at Emblins, Doddinghurst, Essex. Stephen was a labourer and they lived with a widowed farmer, Sarah Littlechild, and her six children. Close by lived John Bloomfield, a farmer and his wife Alice and children William (20; ag. lab) and Mary (15). Was this Sarah's parents? Stephen died in about 1845 in St George's Hanover Square, London and Sarah remarried soon after. They lived in Canterbury Farm, Shenfield, Essex in 1851. The surname was recorded as Ourse. They lived in Sawyers Hall Lane, Shenfield, Essex in 1861. They lived in 13 Black Huts, Warley Common, Shenfield, Essex in 1871.
