On Tuesday 16th December 1873, there was a great hurricane reported in Sheffield by the the Sheffield and Rotherham Independent newspaper (dated 17 December 1873). "Houses were unroofed, trees were torn up as if they were saplings and great chimney shafts pointing their way proudly fifty yards into the sky were toppled over like ninepins". Six fatalities were reported and Charles Walshaw was among the twenty four people taken to hospital. He was at the General Infirmary with an injury to his ankle caused by falling off a ladder at Wadsley.
In 1891, a grandson John Walshaw (b1888 Ecclesfield) lived with the family. In 1901, he was still there and Annie Walshaw, a niece (b1882 Penistone), lived there as a Domestic Servant with Frank Walshaw, a nephew (b1885 Penistone), who was a Farm Servant.
