1. In 1609 Thomas WALSHAW was a Tanner in Cawthorne, Yorkshire. He lived in Cawthorne, Yorkshire 124 March 1609. Thomas Walshaw (tanner of Cawthorne) A Deed shows that Thomas lived in Cawthorne. "24 Mar 1609. Close of land, meadow or pasture called Handcrofte, in Cawthorne, Yorks., lying in the west part of Cawthorne, Yorks., near Milnelene, and now in the tenure of Thomas Walshawe." A Copy confirmation of a bargain and sale shows where Thomas lived ".... and all right and title to one close and a house called Smythee and Smithie Coall house, now in the occupation of Thomas Wallshawe." There were also other members of the Walshaw family in Cawthorne as a Confirmation of a bargain and sale with feoffment dated 16 Mar 1612 shows "Thomas Barneby of Barneby Hall, Yorks., esq., to Nicholas Wallshaw of Cawthorne, Yorks., blacksmith, and Katherin his wife." A Confirmation of a bargain and sale with feoffment dated 18 Dec 1621 shows "Thomas Wallshawe of Cawthorne, Yorks., yeoman, for £4 10/- paid by Thomas Wainewrighte of Cawthorne, Yorks., yeoman, has sold one ironworks, or Le Smythie in Cawthorne and le Coal house adjoining Le Smythie, now in the tenure of widow Wainewrighte." A Bond of the same date shows" Thomas Wallshawe of Cawthorne, Yorks., yeoman, is bound to Thomas Wainewright of the same place, yeoman, in £9, to abide by the conditions of a deed of equal date."
A Deed to lead the uses of a fine dated 23 Jun 1623 notes that Thomas was a tanner and also mentions the Burdetts " William Greene of Micklethwett, Yorks., yeoman, of the first part; Thomas Barnby of Barnby Hall, Yorks., esq., of the second part; Matthew Wentworth of Bretton, esq., Francis Burdett of Burthwett, esq., ... Richard Burdett, gent., ...Thomas Wallshaw of Cawthorne, tanner, ...all of the third part." A Confirmation of a marriage settlement dated 28 Jun 1624 shows "Matthew Lindley of Cawthorne, Yorks., yeoman, confirms that, as a marriage settlement between himself and Mary Littlewood, daughter of Thomas Littlewood of Kexborough, Yorks., husbandman, he has conveyed to Thomas Wallshaw of Cawthorne, Yorks., yeoman, and William Littlewood of Crossland, par. Almonbury, Yorks., clothier, the following: 2 parts of one messuage, divided into 3, in the township of Cawthorne, Yorks., and all buildings and lands adjoining, now occupied by his father, Thomas." A Bargain and sale dated 3 Oct 1626 shows the extent of Thomas' land "Messuage in Cawthorne, with all buildings and lands: one croft lying in the north of the said messuage, adjoining the lathe or barn; one barkehouse and a tanfatte in the croft; a close of pasture called the Urchan Hill: 4 lands of arable, called New Close, being lately enclosed, in the now south field of Cawthorne, containing c. 2 acres; 1 acre of arable lying in the Farr south field of Cawthorne; 2 lands of arable in the west field of Cawthorne and a dole of meadow lying in a close called the Intacke, in Cawthorne, all now in the occupation of Thomas Wallshaw." The Exemplification of a final concord dated: 11 Apr 1627 shows the land in acres. Plaintiffs: "Thomas Walshawe and Thomas Littlewood Deforciants: William Platt and Elizabeth his wife. 1 messuage, 12 acres land, 6 acres meadow, 6 acres pasture, in Cawthorne." A Bargain and sale, with confirmation dated 6 Jun 1639 itemises the land "1 messuage with appurtenances in Cawthorne, now in the occupation of Thomas Wallshaw; one house called a Backehouse there, and a close of land and meadow, in Cawthorne, called the Crofte on the backside the messuage; all the Tannpitts therein: 3 other closes of land, meadow and pasture in Cawthorne called the Urchanhill, the New Close (lately inclosed from the Narsouth field): 1 acre of arable and pasture in Cawthorne west field, between the lands of Richard Wainwright and those of Alexander Falley: except for all tithes issuing out of 3 butts in Farrfield close, adjoining upon the Shawes there, and from a section of land in the same field, being parcel of tithes belonging to William Green." A Bond of the same date shows "Thomas Walshawe of Cawthorne, Yorks., tanner is bound to Richard Russell of Colnebrigge, Nether Bradley, Huddersfield, hammerman, in £390, to keep the covenants of a deed of equal date."
