Phoebe and her children Ann, Benjamin and William were staying with her parents Benjamin and Ann Walshaw at the time of the census. Was she staying there because her daughter, Hannah, had just died? Had she left her child Mary with relatives in Hunshelf? She lived in Midhope, Yorkshire in 1851. Phoebe was classed as a "pauper and late agricultural labourer's wife". Living with her she had her children Mary, Sarah, Jonas, Rosanna and Simeon. She lived in Midhope Stones, Bradfield, Yorkshire in 1871. Phoebe was a widow and was living in the household of Thomas Thickett (a Shoe Maker aged 77). She was classed as a visitor but also living there was her married daughter Ann and her husband and family. She lived in Outibridge, Bradfield, Yorkshire in 1881. Phoebe lived alone. She lived in Outibridge, Bradfield, Yorkshire in 1891. She lived with her son Simeon Broadhead (emumerated as Broomhead). He was unmarried and aged 42. BROADHEAD was christened on 20 Mar 1808 in Bolsterstone, Yorkshire.
He was born about 1808 in Hunshelf, Yorkshire. William was the son
of Benjamin Broadhead and Rose Rose. His parents had married on 9 September 1807
in Rotherham, Yorkshire and had at least ten children - (William b.1808, Lucy
b.1809;c.14 May 1809, Sarah b.1814, Joshua b.1823, Mary Ann b.1825, Jonas b.1826,
John b.1829, Hannah b.1831, George b.1833 and Joseph b.1835). The children were
christened in either Bolsterstone or Penistone. Benjamin had been born in Hunshelf,
Penistone in about 1786 and, in 1808, lived at Hunshelf Bank and worked as a
labourer. He later lived at Avice Royd in Hunshelf for many years. Benjamin was
a farmer of 22 acres and he died in 1867, some 18 years after his eldest son
William. In 1841 he was an Agricultural Labourer in Woodend, Thurstonland, Yorkshire.

WALSHAW and John STANLEY were married about 1852. John was a File
Cutter and he had lived in Oughtibridge, Bradfield for many years. He and his
first wife Mary Ann had had nine children (Sarah b.1834, John b.1836, Harriet
b.1838-1839, Benjamin b.1839, Elizabeth b.1841, Mary b.1843, George b.1844, Caroline
b.1846-buried 30 May 1848 and Maria b.1848). His wife, Mary Ann died in 1850
and was buried in Outibridge on 20 May 1850. A child, David, was buried on 23
July 1850 aged 9 weeks in Outibridge. Did she die soon after his birth? In 1851
John was a widower with seven children to look after. It would have been a convenient
arrangement for his and Phoebe's families to combine. They lived in Oughtibridge,
Bradfield, Yorkshire between 1852 and 1866. They lived in Oughtibridge,
Bradfield, Yorkshire in 1861. In the household were John and Phoebe
and his son George (a File Cutter aged 16) and his married daughter Elizabeth
Wilson (aged 19) and her one year old daughter Mary Wilson as well as her children
Simeon Broadhead (a File Cutter aged 19) and Mary Broadhead (a Visitor aged 23)
and their children Emma and Sophia. John STANLEY
was born about 1811 in Bradfield, Yorkshire. He died about 1866 in
Bradfield, Yorkshire. He was a File Smith and Farmer in Outibridge,
Bradfield, Yorkshire. The tools soon became uneven and blunt, so
his workshop would have contained a grindstone, vice, and small forge with bellows.
The forge was used to heat tools for sharpening. Stone troughs about 2 feet square
and of a similar depth held the water used in the process. His normal weekly
quota was one gross, amounting to 156 files; there were 13 to a file-cutters
dozen.
