Giles SHAW was born about 1797 in Denby, Yorkshire.
The Shaw Family:- Giles was probably the son of Giles Shaw and Bridget
(nee Stanley). Giles (senior) was born at Denby in 1775, the son of John Shaw
of Lower Denby and his wife Sarah. John and Sarah had at least seven sons (Samuel,
John, George, James, Isaac b.1767, Giles b.1774 and Thomas) - all born at Denby.
In John's will dated 27 September 1803 (proved 17 March 1804) he was described
as a Farmer of Denby. He left the majority of his estate to his wife, Sarah,
and his eldest son, Samuel. The other brothers had £10 each. His son, John,
was left some coals which he was to sell and then the proceeds were to be divided
among his brothers. To Giles he left a croft in Denby called Plumpton which was
about 200 square yards in size.
Giles and Bridget married at Penistone on 26 June 1797. Bridget (b.1770) was
the daughter of Benjamin Stanley and his wife Elizabeth/Betty (nee Butterworth)
of Oxspring Mill. Benjamin and Elizabeth had married at Silkstone in 1767 and
Benjamin owned Oxspring Mill as his father Martin had before him. Giles and Bridget
had at least five children (George/Giles b.1797, Charles b.1800, Charlotte b.1803,
Elizabeth b.1805 and John b.1809). Bridget died on 4 January 1810 and was buried
at Penistone. She was 39 but her age was wrongly recorded as 49.
In 1841 Giles (junior) was of independent means and had Elizabeth Bakehouse,
aged 10, living with him at Penistone Bridge. By 1851 Giles was a widower with
a private occupation/Lodging House Keeper and there were two visitors
The Shaws were obviously a close knit family as Giles' daughter, Elizabeth married
a Benjamin Shaw, a shoe maker (b.1806 Penistone) by banns at Penistone Church
on 17 February 1829 and then was housekeeper between 1851 and 1871 for her uncle
Isaac and then her cousin John at the 100 acre farm at Cat Hill, Hoylandswaine.
In 1861 she also had her son, Herbert (b.1842 Penistone) living with her and
in 1871 he was a labourer on the farm and her grandson, Stanley (b.1858 Sheffield)
was also at the farm. Elizabeth died in 1877, a year after her husband Benjamin's
death. Giles Junior married Elizabeth Walshaw. Between 1820 and 1841 he was
a Weaver in Ingbirchworth, Yorkshire. About 1845 he was a Fancy Weaver
in Ingbirchworth, Yorkshire. In 1851 he was a Weaver in Stayley,
Cheshire. Between 1861 and 1866 he was a Power Loom Cotton Weaver
