William ROEBUCK
was born on 1 May 1907 in Ingbirchworth, Yorkshire. William was the
son of Edwin Roebuck and Mary Turner.
The Roebuck Family William's great grandfather, Enoch Roebuck,
was born in 1794 (d.1865 Ingbirchworth). On 15 July 1817 he married Martha Turner
(b.1797; d.1874 Halifax). The marriage was by Banns and both were "of this
parish". Enoch and Martha lived in Thurlstone, probably at the Top o' th'
Town, and had ten children. All were dedicated at the Particular Baptist, Thurlstone.
Their children were:- Clementina (1817), Elizabeth (1819), Hannah (1822), Amos
(1824), Mary (1826), George (1829), Sarah (1832), Ruth (1834), Enoch (b.13
February 1837) and Henry (1839). From 1828 the Providence Particular Baptists
met in a workshop behind some cottages at Top o' th' Town. Adult baptisms were
performed in the stream and later in the River Don. In 1851 33 people attended
morning worship, 37 came in the afternoon and 23 in the evening.
In 1841 Enoch was a clothier at Town End, Thurlstone and Martha and all
his children lived with him. George died in 1842.
In 1851 Enoch and Martha still lived in Thurlstone, where Enoch was a
woollen clothier. His children were: Amos (woollen weaver), Ruth (woollen weaver)
and Enoch (woollen weaver) and there was also one male assistant woollen weaver
and a female house servant.
In 1861 Enoch and Martha lived at Town Street, Thurlstone and Enoch was
a woollen hand loom weaver. He and Martha had their children Ruth and Henry at
home and also a grandson, Enoch Roebuck Coldwell (b.1846 Thurlstone). (Enoch
Roebuck Coldwell was the son of Elizabeth Roebuck (1819) who had married Joseph
Coldwell in 1843. Joseph was a sawyer and later a woollen fulling miller in Thurlstone
and he and Elizabeth had Hannah (1844), Enoch (1846), George (1848), Sarah (1849),
Joseph (1851), Henry (1853) and Ruth (1859). Elizabeth died in 1871.)
Enoch Roebuck died in 1865.
In 1859 Enoch Roebuck (junior - transcribed as ENOCK) married Sarah Hanson
(b.28 Feb 1835 Ingbirchworth; c.7 June 1835 Denby; youngest daughter of William
Hanson and Elizabeth Burgess). Enoch and Sarah's children were:- Helen (1860-1861),
Hanson (1862-1864), Emily (1868), Oliver (1870), Harry (1873) and Edwin
(1877 Ingbirchworth).
In 1861 Enoch and Sarah lived at Top o' th' Town, Thurlstone with their
daughter Helen. Enoch was a Woollen Hand Loom Weaver.
In 1871 Enoch and Sarah lived at New Row, Thurlstone with Emily and Oliver
and a boarder (Enoch's nephew) Enoch Roebuck Coldwell (1845 Thurlstone; Labourer
at Steel Works).
In 1881 Enoch and Sarah lived in Ingbirchworth. Enoch was a grocer and
draper.Their children, Emily, Oliver, Harry and Edwin, lived with them.
In 1884 Enoch died.
In 1891 Sarah was a widow but she still was a grocer and draper in Ingbirchworth
and her children Emily, Oliver (a blacksmith), Harry (an apprentice joiner) and
Edwin, lived with her.
In 1901 Sarah lived alone in Ingbirchworth and she was a retired grocer.
However she was not quite alone as next door was her daughter Emily (1868). She
had married Charles William Knowles in 1892 and she and Charles lived with their
children Ernest (1893), Henry (1896), Evelyn (1897) and George (1900). They had
a female domestic servant and Charles was a relieving official. Sarah's son Oliver
was a shoeing and jobbing smith and he lived at 2 Talbot Road, Penistone with
his wife Alice Ann (nee Lockwood; b.1871 Hoylandswaine; m. 1895) and their children
Enoch (1896) and Annie (1898). Her son Harry lived in Ingbirchworth and had taken
over as grocer and joiner. He lived with his wife Jane (nee Hanson; b.1869 Ingbirchworth;
m.1893) and their children Fred (1893) and Hanson (1899). Her youngest son
Edwin also lived in Ingbirchworth also. He had married Mary Turner (aka Polly)
in 1897 and their children were: Turner (1898), Melvyn (1901), Sarah (1903),
Cyrilla (1905), William (1907), Oliver (1908) and two other daughters
before their last daughter Elleanor (aka Pum). In 1901 Edwin was a joiner. Apparently
William's father, Edwin, wanted William and Clara's son to be named Edwin after
him. As they refused and called him Rodney they were ignored by the whole family
and eventually moved to Barnsley in 1938. He died on 4 Nov 1960 in Barnsley,
Yorkshire. Clara WALSHAW and William ROEBUCK had the following children:
+729 | i. | Betty ROEBUCK. |
+730 | ii. | Rodney ROEBUCK. |
