1. Thomas VERNON was born about 1791 in Marple,
Cheshire. Between 1841 and 1851 he was a Boatman in Marple, Cheshire.
In 1851 John Derbyshire (b1834, Marple, son of Ralph) lived with Thomas and
Bridget and was classed as a relative. He was Thomas' first wife's greatnephew.
He signed a will on 11 Mar 1855 in Marple, Cheshire. His will stated
that he was a coal dealer and that, after the funeral expenses and debts had
been paid, his wife Bridget was to receive the household furniture, beds, bedding,
plate, linen and china that "she was possessed of" and which belonged
to her at the time of her marriage to Thomas plus "all my interest which
I have in the Cooperative Society Stores in Marple".
To his son William's wife (Jane Vernon nee Derbyshire) he left a chest of drawers,
corner cupboard and snap table. The other furniture and personal estate was left
to his son William (a boat man) and Joseph Dean (of Stockport; Thomas' friend)
who were to be executors. Everything was to be auctioned and the money was to
be divided into five equal parts. Four of the parts were bequeathed to his four
children (William, Thomas, Samuel and Sarah) and the fifth part was to go to
his granddaughter Hannah Sheppard when she became 21.
He also stipulated that he wished his son William to take up the running of the
coal business and that he should take up the "coal wharf stock of coal,
fixtures and utensils belonging thereto situate in Marple". The will was
proved on 17 November 1865. He lived in Canal Buildings, Marple, Cheshire in
1861. He was a widower and he had a housekeeper. In 1861 he was
a Coal Dealer in Marple, Cheshire. He died on 18 Oct 1865 in Marple,
Cheshire. He was buried on 21 Oct 1865 in All Saints Church, Marple,
Cheshire.
Thomas VERNON and Mary DERBYSHIRE were married before
1820 in Marple, Cheshire. They lived in Canal Buildings, Marple,
Cheshire in 1841. Jane and George Derbyshire (children of John Derbyshire
and Mary Pearson) lived with the Vernons. They were Mary's nephew and niece.
Mary DERBYSHIRE (daughter of John DERBYSHIRE and
Mary MILWARD) was born about 1790 in Marple, Cheshire. She was buried
on 13 Jan 1847 in All Saints Church, Marple, Cheshire. She died about
1847 in Marple, Cheshire. Thomas VERNON and Mary DERBYSHIRE had the

Thomas
VERNON and Bridget CASTLE were married about 1849 in All Saints Church, Marple,
Cheshire. Bridget was a widow at the time of her marriage to Thomas.
Her maiden name was Crosland. On 4 January 1813 Bridget Crosland had married
William Castle in All Hallow's Church, Kirkburton, Huddersfield. Both were "of
this parish" and the marriage was by Banns. William and Bridget had had
at least seven children in Hepworth who were christened at the same church:-
Lydia (1813), Sally (1814), Jane (1817), Nancy (1819), Charles (1821), Andrew
(1824) and William (1825). They moved to Stayleybridge in Cheshire and their
last son, Henry, was born there in 1830. In 1841 William and Bridget lived at
Demesne, Stayley and William was a clothier. Their children were listed as Jane,
Nancy, Charles (a cotton spinner), Andrew (a cotton spinner), William and Henry.
Bridget's husband, William, died in 1845.
Her sons Andrew (b1824, Hepworth) and William (b1825, Hepworth) eventually came
to live in Marple near their mother. Andrew married Hepzibah Woodcock in Marple
in 1849 and in 1851 he was a cotton spinner and lived with his mother-in-law
and her children at Hawk Green, Marple. He was transcribed as Andrew ESTLE and
his wife was HABIBAH. In 1851 William lodged at 5 Oxford Street, Stayley and
worked as a cotton spinner. William married Jane Edwards in Marple in 1856 and
in 1861 both sons were in the cotton trade and lived at Hollins Fold, Marple.
Bridget CASTLE was born about 1793 in Hepworth, Yorkshire.
She was buried on 8 May 1860 in All Saints Church, Marple, Cheshire.
She died about 1860 in Marple, Cheshire.
