1. Samuel UNWIN was born about 1778 in Youlgreave,
Derbyshire. The Unwin Family. Samuel's parents were John Unwin/Onion
and Mary Nutall. Their children were: Obadiah (b.1768), Betty (b.1771), Joshua
(b.1773), John (b.1775), Samuel (b.1778), George (b.1781) and Robert (b.1789-1793).
The family lived in Youlgreave, Derbyshire.
It would appear that at least the sons Obadiah, Joshua, John, Samuel and George
moved to Mellor in the early 1800s to find work. George died in Mellor in 1804.
Joshua had married Elizabeth Frost on 18 March 1794 in Stoney Middleton and they
had one son, John, in Youlgreave before moving to Mellor where their other children
were born - Harriet (1806), Maria (1809), Hannah (1811), Anne (1812) and George
(1816).
Joshua was a sawyer as were his other brothers John and Samuel and they all worked
for Oldknow. It is interesting to note that the skills were passed down through
the family as George (b.1816) was a carpenter and dry soap manufacturer as was
his son Samuel (b.26 Aug 1849). Obadiah lived at Chapel Field, Church Road, Marple
in 1841 and he was still a labourer. He died in 1844 and was buried at All Saints
Church, Marple on 24 November 1844. In 1809 he was a Sawyer for Samuel Oldknow
in Marple, Cheshire. Samuel was one of a family of Sawyers who all
worked for Oldknow on projects at the Chapel or at the Mill. In 1841 he was
a Lime Burner in Marple, Cheshire. In 1851 he was a Labourer in Marple,
Cheshire. He died about 1858 in Marple, Cheshire. He
was buried on 22 Sep 1858 in All Saints Church, Marple, Cheshire.
