Matilda BROMFIELD and George PRINCE were married on 8 Jan 1858 in Ballarat, Victoria,
Australia. Their children were Helen (1858-1858), William Albert
(1859-1860), Edward James (1860-1862), Harry Cull (1862-1863), Helen Matilda
(Nellie) (1863), Emily (1865), Arabella Maria (1867), Jessie (1869), Elizabeth

When her husband George died in 1888 Helen was forty eight years old and had
seven of their fifteen children left. Six of their children - three boys and
three girls (including the first four) had died before their first birthdays.
Another daughter, Jessie, died in 1886 (aged 17) and Nellie died in 1888 (aged
24), Her surviving children in 1888 were Emily (23 married), Arabella (21 married),
Elizabeth (17), Frederick (14), Austin (10), Alice (8) and Charles (5). She had
five children at home and a hotel to run. However she was used to hard work and
George, her husband, had first gone into Ararat Asylum when she was 8 months
pregnant with Austin. He was in and out of the Asylum when she had her last two
children. She aslo had her mother Flora White (nee Tanner) living with her until
her death in 1897. They lived in Raglan Hotel, Raglan, Victoria, Australia between

in the 1870s and left his wife to run the Raglan Hotel. During this time the
hotel's name was changed to the Prince of Wales Hotel - like her father's hotel
in Snake Valley. When George returned to the hotel in the 1880s the hotel reverted
to its former name of Raglan! George PRINCE was born
about 1832 in Lymington, Hampshire. His father was Henry Prince (1801-27
