8. Henry SIMS
was christened on 8 Jan 1755 in Ringwood, Hampshire. He was born
about 1755 in Burley, Hampshire. He was one of the founders of Burley
Chapel about 1789 in Burley, Hampshire. The chapel was initially
small, roughly built and thatched. It was extended in 1825. He died on 5 Oct
1829 in Burley, Hampshire. He signed a will. Henry's
will describes him as a "Yeoman Farmer of Bisterne Closes". He was
the first of the family to be buried in Burley - in the graveyard of the chapel
which he helped to establish. His headstone is near the yew tree and path and
reads:-
"Once in this World did remain,
My latter days were grief and pain,
But when the Lord did think it best,
He took me to a place of Rest."
Henry SIMS and Elizabeth MARCHANT were
married on 13 May 1782 in Ringwood, Hampshire. They lived in Bisterne
Close, Burley, Hampshire in 1819. Elizabeth
MARCHANT was born about 1760 in Burley, Hampshire. John Marchant
was Elizabeth's father. He was Overseer to the Vill of Burley in 1789 and owned
land and a cottage called "Woods" in 1790. This has remained in the
Marchant family until the 20th Century, although the cottage disappeared many
years before this. She was left a bequest by Thomas Eyre, Bailiff to the Manor
of Burley about 1829. She received 2 small chests of drawers, one
looking glass, one small India cabinet, one picture of the Saviour and a life
interest of £6 per year, which after her death was to go to the Trustees
of the Chapel (Meeting House) in Burley. Henry SIMS and Elizabeth MARCHANT had
the following children:
