4. Benjamin SILVERWOOD was born on 5 May 1803 in Hoylandswaine, Yorkshire. He was christened on 22 May 1803 in Penistone, Yorkshire. Between 1828 and 1841 he was a Farmer in Rushy Lee, Bradfield, Yorkshire. Between 1847 and 1860 he was a Farmer in Bump Hall Farm, Hoylandswaine, Yorkshire. It is interesting to note that Benjamin lived close to the Hepplestones and the Walshaws who lived at Carr Head, Hoylandswaine. In 1861 he was a Labourer at Wire Works in Stocksbridge, Yorkshire. In 1871 he was a Labourer in Stocksbridge, Yorkshire. He died of senile dementia and diarrhoea on 15 Sep 1887 in Kingstone Place, Barnsley, Yorkshire. Rushy Lee which Benjamin farmed is now under Langsett Reservoir and he was there when his first wife died. He remarried. He later farmed at Bump Hall Farm in Hoylandswaine, close to the Penistone Union Workhouse.

Benjamin SILVERWOOD and Martha BEAUMONT were married on 9 Apr 1828 in Penistone, Yorkshire. Martha's father, then known as Joseph Walshaw, was one of the witnesses. Martha BEAUMONT (daughter of John BEAUMONT and Ann BERRY) was christened on 13 Apr 1809 in Silkstone Church, Silkstone, Yorkshire. She was born about 1809 in Hoylandswaine, Yorkshire. She was also known as Martha Walshaw about 1828. Martha married as Martha Walshaw in 1828. She died on 12 Apr 1837 in Midhope, Yorkshire. She was buried in Apr 1837 in Penistone, Yorkshire. On her gravestone is the rhyme
"Husband farewell I'm gone before
My love to you can be no more
No grief or sorrow for me make
But love my Children for my sake"
It is possible that Benjamin and his second wife Annis are buried in the same grave. However, no other burials are recorded on the gravestone but they died in very reduced circumstances and possibly no-one could afford to add to the inscription. Benjamin SILVERWOOD and Martha BEAUMONT had the following children:

Benjamin SILVERWOOD and Annis MORTON were married on 28 Feb 1841 in Bradfield, Yorkshire. They lived in Stocksbridge, Yorkshire in 1871. Annis MORTON (daughter of George MORTON and Martha STOCKS) was born about 1817 in Bradfield, Yorkshire. She was christened on 28 Dec 1817 in Bradfield, Yorkshire. She lived in 13 Denton Buildings, Barnsley, Yorkshire in 1891. She lived with her son Isaac an grandson Sydney Marsh. She died of old age and bronchitis on 22 Dec 1899 in Penistone Union Workhouse, Penistone, Yorkshire. Annis' parents married on 4 March 1811 in Bradfield but her father died 10 weeks before she was christened. George Morton was buried on 19 October 1817. In January 1822, her mother applied for outdoor relief for herself and three children. There is no other record of Martha. Annis' uncle Benjamin Morton and his wife Sarah Ibbetson lived in the same village and had at least 4 children between 1814 and 1822. Annis would have known them well and was one year younger than her cousin Ann.
Benjamin Silverwood would have needed a housekeeper after his wife Martha's death in April 1837. Annis' uncle, Benjamin Morton, was a farmer in Upper Midhope and would have known Benjamin and may have introduced Annis to him. Her son, Enos, was born 8 months later on 12 December 1837.
Annis spent a short time at Peck Hall, Bradfield at the time of Enos' illegitimate birth. Did she have friends or relatives there? In 1841, the farmhouse called Peck Hall had four households including William Thorpe, an Agricultural Labourer, and his wife Ann. Was Ann her cousin? On 22 December she was admitted to the Bradfield Workhouse, possibly to get medical attention and she also registered his birth. The Admission Register has "Annis Morton 20 and Enos her bastard 1 week: From Upper Midhope: four strings to her bow". Did this mean that she suggested four possible fathers? There is nothing about the birth in the Bradfield Bastardy Registers so the father was never identified.
Annis was discharged from the Workhouse with Enos on 6 January 1838 and she returned to "Upper Midhope at her own desire" and she continued her work as housekeeper to Benjamin at Rushy Lee.
Annis had another illegitimate child, Ellen, in 1839 and as she gave Benjamin's address, though not his name on the Birth Certificate - it was probably his. She married him in 1841 and their first child was born less than three weeks later. They went on to have nine more children
The three eldest children of Benjamin's first wife, Annis' two illegitimate children plus Benjamin and Annis' ten children remained as a family and all have the Silverwood surname in all the Census Returns. Benjamin SILVERWOOD and Annis MORTON had the following children:
