19. James HEPPLESTONE was born about 1834 in Hoylandswaine, Yorkshire. He was christened on 28 Dec 1834 in Silkstone Church, Silkstone, Yorkshire. Between 1851 and 1891 he was a Coal Miner in Silkstone, Yorkshire. He lived in Fell House Lane, Hoylandswaine, Yorkshire in 1861. James was recorded as being married although he lived with his parents and siblings. He had only just married and his daughter Eliza was three days old and she and her mother and elder sister were with his in-laws. He lived in 1 South Yorkshire Buildings, Silkstone Common, Silkstone, Yorkshire in 1891. He lived alone but his wife Elizabeth was visiting their daughter Ellen. He died about 1896 in Silkstone, Yorkshire.

James HEPPLESTONE and Elizabeth CLARKSON were married about 1861 in Silkstone Church, Silkstone, Yorkshire. They lived in Fell House, Hoylandswaine, Yorkshire between 1871 and 1881. Elizabeth CLARKSON was born about 1838 in Cawthorne Lanes, Yorkshire. Elizabeth was the daughter of John Clarkson and Rebecca Sykes.
The Clarkson Family:- John Clarkson (1812-1890) had been born in Cawthorne Lanes and Rebecca Sykes (1812-1886) was born in Hoylandswaine. John was a Nail Maker and they lived in Hoylandswaine at Kidfield Nook between 1841 and 1851; at Fell House Lane in 1861 and in Reynold Lane between 1871 and 1881. Their children were:- Thomas (1836), Elizabeth (1838), James (1841), Robert (1844), John (1853), Ann (1856) and Fred (1858-1898). John was related to two of the children (James and Elizabeth Clarkson) killed in the Huskar Pit disaster on 4 July 1838 and named his next two children after them. Elizabeth's brothers were all Nail Makers but later her brothers James and Fred were Miners. Her parents, John and Rebecca, and her brother Fred, were buried in Hoylandswaine.
Elizabeth's eldest brother Thomas Clarkson married Elizabeth Field (b.1838 Hoylandswaine) and in 1861 they lived at Hill Top, Hoylandswaine with their son George (b.1859 Thurgoland) and two lodgers. Thomas was a Miner. In 1871 Thomas (Tom) and Elizabeth lived at Bullah Hall (stet - Buller Hall) and Thomas was a Game Keeper with two more children Alfred (b.1862 Silkstone) and Ellinor (b.1866 Penistone). Elizabeth died at the age of 35 in 1874 and Thomas went as a Game Keeper for Sir Charles Anderson at Lea Hall, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire. In 1881 he lodged with the Capes family near the Hall but later in the year he married Bridget Hankin and by 1891 they lived at the Keeper's House near Lea Hall with their children Mary Elizabeth (b.1882) and John Robert (b.1885). When Sir Charles died the Hall closed as his only heir was a daughter and Thomas was out of work. In 1901 he lived at 51 Drake Street, Gainsborough and was a Crank Turner and his children were John Robert (an Office Boy at the port) and Christina (b.1892). Thomas died in 1902 in Gainsborough. Thomas' elder boys had initially lodged at Hill Top, Hoylandswaine. Both were Miners and George lodged with the Kilners in 1881 and Alfred was next door with the Stones'. In 1889 George married his cousin Hannah. (See Hannah Hepplestone b.1862). George and his wife and Alfred followed their father and in 1886 Alfred married a girl from Lincolnshire (Sarah Ann Harrison b. 1865) and they had two sons (Frederick 1887 and Ernest 1888) before both families returned to Sheffield in about 1898. In 1901 Alfred was a Machine Planer and lived at 77 Leigh Street, Attercliffe, Sheffield.
In 1864 Elizabeth's brother James Clarkson married Louisa Pinder (b.16 Feb 1845 Hoylandswaine - 1900) and they had a son Pinder Clarkson (1864-1914). In 1871 they lived at Abbeydale Toll House in Sheffield with Louisa's brother Edward and his wife Elizabeth. Edward was a Methodist Local Preacher and a Collector of Tolls and Louisa helped him whilst James Clarkson worked as a Coal Miner. In 1881 James and Pinder were Labourers in the Iron Works and the family had moved back to live in Mustard Hill, Hoylandswaine. (They were enumerated as CLARKSONS.) James lived there until at least 1901 but was a Coal Miner in 1891 and 1901. Pinder was a Steel Worker in 1891. By 1901 Louisa had died and James had Amelia Rendleson living with him (a visitor and a widow aged 59 b. Silkstone). In 1892 Pinder married Ellen Ann Whiteley (b.1872 Holmfirth). She already had a daughter Amy (b.1891 Holmfirth) but she was known as Clarkson and she was brought up with Pinder and Ellen's children Percy (1896) and Nora (1901). In 1901 the family lived at 32 Wentworth Road, Penistone.
In 1866 Elizabeth's brother Robert Clarkson married Eliza Senior (b1847 Hoylandswaine). In 1871 Robert and Eliza and their children Irving (1867) and Caroline (1870) lived at Fell House, Hoylandswaine next door to Elizabeth and James Hepplestone. Robert was a coal miner. By 1881 they had moved to 22 New Street, Rawmarsh, Rotherham. In 1889 Irving married Sarah Hargreaves Bamforth (the daughter of Edward and Susannah Bamforth). Their son Wilford Bamforth Clarkson was born the next year but Sarah died soon after his birth. In 1891 Robert and Eliza lived at 1 New Street, Rawmarsh with Irving, Caroline and four month old Wilford. Irving married Rose Hannah A Rickett in 1894 and they lived at 176 Effingham Street, Rotherham in 1901 with their children Alfred Russell N (1896) and Ivy Evelyn (1898). Irving was a monumental sculptor working on his own account. In 1901 Robert and Eliza lived with their grandson Wilford at 61 Rawmarsh Hill, Rawmarsh. Robert was a retired miner and listed as an invalid.
In 1880 Elizabeth's brother John Clarkson married Alice Ellis (b1853 Hoylandswaine) and in 1881 they lived with his parents John and Rebecca at Reynold Lane, Hoylandswaine with their daughter Edith (1880). John was a coal miner. In 1891 John was a boiler stoker and he, Alice and Edith lived at Skin Pit Lane, Hoylandswaine. In 1901 John (a boiler inspector), Alice and Edith (a dressmaker) lived at 9 Bridge Street, Penistone.
In 1871 Elizabeth's sister Ann Clarkson was only 16 but was the temporary house and toll gate keeper at Toll Bar House, Wellhouse Lane, Hoylandswaine and her brother Fred (14) and niece Norah (6) lived with her. (Whose child was she?)
In 1881 Fred lived with his parents and he was a steel rail driller. In 1884 Fred Clarkson married Jane Ann Batley (b.1861 Silkstone) and in 1891 they lived at Nipping Row Cottages, Hoylandswaine with their daughters Emma Rebecca (aka Rebecca b.1887 Silkstone) and Clarice (1889). Another daughter, Winifred, was born in 1892 but Fred died in 1898 and Jane Ann remarried two years later in Barnsley. Her new husband was John Stubbs, a colliery surface labourer from Worsborough and they lived with Clarice and Winifred at 51 Cope Street, Barnsley in 1901. In 1901 Rebecca Clarkson lived with her grandparents, George and Emma Batley, in High Street, Silkstone.
Now back to Elizabeth... She was christened on 27 Aug 1838 in Cawthorne Church, Cawthorne, Yorkshire. She lived in Fell Lane, Hoylandswaine, Yorkshire in 1861. Although James and Elizabeth had just got married Elizabeth was at her parents home probably because she had just had her daughter Eliza who was three days old at the time of the Census. Eliza was registered as Heppenstall but at the time of the census the whole family (including Elizabeth, Susannah and Eliza) were emumerated as Clarkson. She lived in Dodworth, Yorkshire between 1891 and 1901. Between 1891 and 1901, she lived with her daughter Ellen and family. In 1901 she was a Caretaker of a School in Dodworth, Yorkshire.
