17. Mary HEPPLESTONE was born on 22 Jun 1827 in Hoylandswaine, Yorkshire. She was christened on 29 Jul 1827 in Silkstone Church, Silkstone, Yorkshire. In 1851 she was a House Servant in Hoylandswaine, Yorkshire. Mary's two children William and Elizabeth were probably not Samuel Lockwood's children even though no father's name was noted. Certainly George, Walter, Hannah and Kate were Samuel Lockwood's children. The illegitimacy rate in the mid 19th century, as a percentage of all live births, was 6 per cent. The proportion of brides who were pregnant when they married was 40 per cent. Illegitimacy rates were higher in the countryside, where attitudes were less disapproving. In the 1851 Census Hoylandswaine had 139 households with 16 of the households which included illegitimate children - some 11.5 per cent. Between them those 16 households had 20 illegitimate children. In 1861 she was a Charwoman in Hoylandswaine, Yorkshire. She lived in Coates, Thurgoland, Yorkshire in 1871. In 1871, Mary and her children lived with Samuel Lockwood and all the family was known as Lockwood and were recorded as such on the Census. She lived in Blacker Green, Silkstone, Yorkshire in 1881. She lived in Kine Moor, Silkstone, Yorkshire in 1891. She was a widow living with Joseph and Kate Whittaker. Kate was her youngest daughter. She died of Bronchitis on 6 Dec 1892 in Kine Moor, Silkstone, Yorkshire.

Mary HEPPLESTONE and Samuel LOCKWOOD were married on 14 Dec 1875 in Silkstone Church, Silkstone, Yorkshire. They lived in Blacker Green, Silkstone, Yorkshire in 1881. Samuel and Mary lived with Walter, Hannah and Kate. Samuel LOCKWOOD was christened on 7 Jan 1816 in Silkstone Church, Silkstone, Yorkshire. He was born about 1816 in Silkstone, Yorkshire. Samuel's parents were Benjamin Lockwood and Ann Jubb. He was the youngest son with nine siblings. In 1841 he was a Shoemaker for Henry Roberts in Silkstone, Yorkshire. He lived in Kine Moor, Silkstone, Yorkshire between 1851 and 1861. In 1851, Samuel was unmarried and lived with his widowed mother Ann who was 74 and had been born in Cawthorne. Also living with them were Samuel Jukes, his illegitimate son (b1842, Hoylandswaine) and Emma Lockwood Jukes (b1844, Hoylandswaine). Their mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Jukes.
In 1861, Samuel was unmarried and still lived with his widowed mother Ann and Samuel Jukes, a Coal Miner, and Emma Jukes. On the death of his mother he inherited Kine Moor. This consisted of cottages, watercourses, woods and farm land. In 1851 he was a Cordwainer in Silkstone, Yorkshire. In 1861 he was a Gamekeeper in Silkstone, Yorkshire. Hannah and Kate Hepplestone were definitely Samuel's daughters. Samuel Lockwood's mother Ann died in 1862. Did Mary and Samuel then live together? Samuel had brought up his first two illegitimate children after their mother Elizabeth Jukes had died. It appears that he and Mary Hepplestone then had at least four children before their marriage. He lived in Coates, Thurgoland, Yorkshire in 1871. In 1871 he was a Farmer of 23 acres in Coates, Thurgoland, Yorkshire. In 1881 he was a Woodman and Farmer of half an acre in Blacker Green, Silkstone, Yorkshire. He died on 5 Oct 1883 in Silkstone, Yorkshire.
