James HEPPLESTONE and Rachel
KILNER were married before 1838. They lived in Hall Lane, Hoylandswaine,
Yorkshire in 1841. James had become involved with the Chartist movement.
Fergus O'Connor led the Physical Force branch of the Chartists and encouraged
riots and, in support of the cause, wrote “seditious libels” in
the Northern Star newspaper, for which he was imprisoned in March 1840.
To show their support James and Rachel named their second son Fergus O'Connor
Hepplestone later in the year. The Chartist's dream of “Fergus and Freedom”
faltered and by the time Fergus O'Connor died in 1855 the movement had come
to an end.
