4. James HAYLES was born about 1848 in Newport, Isle of Wight. In 1861 he was a Stable Boy in Newport, Isle of Wight. Between 1873 and 1876 he was an Assistant Warder in Portland, Dorset. From 1848 to 1921 this was the site of an adult convict prison. In 1881 he was an Assistant Warder in Princetown, Dartmoor, Devon. Between 1891 and 1901 he was a Prison Warder in Newport, Isle of Wight.

James HAYLES and Catherine BLAINEY were married about 1873 in Weymouth, Dorset. They lived in Portland, Dorset between 1873 and 1876. They lived in Barracks, Princetown, Dartmoor, Devon in 1881. The Barracks was noted as being "now occupied by warders". James and Catherine lived with their eldest four children. They lived in Hunny Hill, Newport, Isle of Wight between 1891 and 1901. In 1891 James and Catherine lived with their children Joseph, James, Mary, Edward, Annie and William and James' sister Alice Cosh (nee Hayles; b.1868) and her daughter Caroline Jessie Cosh (b.1888).
In 1901 James and Catherine lived with Frances Gilbert (married daughter), Annie, William and a niece Mary Blainey (b.1897 London). Catherine BLAINEY was born about 1852 in St. Helier, Jersey. James HAYLES and Catherine BLAINEY had the following children:

John HAYLES was born about 1874 in Portland, Dorset. In 1891 he was a 1st Class Boy in Portsmouth Harbour. He was serving aboard the training ship "Martin". In 1901 he was an Able Seaman in the battleship "Repulse" off Gibraltar.

Joseph HAYLES was born about 1877 in Princetown, Dartmoor, Devon. He lived in 3/4 Saville Street, Marylebone, London in 1901. He was a visitor, as was his brother-in-law, James Gilbert, at the house of Elias Bower (b.1865 Portland; sergeant in the Metropolitan Police). His wife was Ann W. Bower (nee Blainey; b.1866 Portland) and they had a son David aged 11 and a niece Evelyn Blainey aged 1 also staying with them.

James HAYLES was born about 1879 in Princetown, Dartmoor, Devon. In 1901 he was a Dairy Clerk in 23 Old Hill Road, Hackney, London. He lived and worked on the dairy premises.
