1. Edward HAYLES was born about 1758 in Arreton, Isle of Wight. He died of old age on 28 Jan 1850 in Packsfield, Arreton, Isle of Wight. His death was registered by the mark of Ruth Brading. Ruth had been born in Brading in 1790. Her husband Benjamin was a pauper Agricultural Labourer in 1851. Her maiden name was Gladdis and Ruth and Benjamin had married on the 24th April 1808 in Brading. They lived in Lower Packsfield and Ruth died in 1858. He was buried on 3 Feb 1850 in Arreton, Isle of Wight. In Arreton, there were two sets of Edward and Elizabeth Hayles. There may have been another Edward Hayles and spouse also in Arreton. At least two sets lived in Packsfield.
The elder pair were this Edward Hayles who was buried on 3 February 1850 aged 92 in Arreton. The Isle of Wight Record Office index shows that he was "of Paxfield". An Elizabeth Hayles was buried on 16 August 1846 in Arreton. Her record also indicates that she was "of Paxfield".
They younger pair were Edward Hayles (b.1779) who married Elizabeth Moody. These were often, but not exclusively, known as "of Littletown" which is near Packsfield.
It would appear that George, Jeremiah and William were all born before the marriage of Edward Hayles and Elizabeth Moody.
They may have been the younger children of the elder Edward and Elizabeth Hayles - however these parents still seem a little old. Taking her death certificate as a guide Elizabeth (nee Unknown) would have been 43 when George was born; 45 when Jeremiah was born and 48 when Jane was born - not impossible though. I return to the records.
On 4 July 1801 Edward received Poor Relief of 1s 6d.
The House of Industry records show one off "lying in" payments made to parents when a child was born to poor parents. These were as follows to Edward Hayles (the child's name in brackets is my addition):
22 June 1805 13s 0d (George)
05 December 1807 10s 0d (Jeremiah)
06 October 1810 13s 0d (Jane)
The record for 22 June 1805 shows that Edward had 6 dependent children. Therefore there are at least 5 more children to research. The record for 5 December 1807 shows that Edward had 5 dependent children. One probably reached the age when he/she supported themselves.
However another concern is - IF these (plus others) were the children of the elder Edward and Elizabeth - why were both their deaths not registered by a family member but by Ruth Brading?

Edward HAYLES and Elizabeth UNKNOWN were married. Elizabeth UNKNOWN was born about 1762 in Arreton, Isle of Wight. She died of apoplexy on 12 Aug 1846 in Packsfield, Arreton, Isle of Wight. Her death was registered by the mark of Ruth Brading. She was buried on 16 Aug 1846 in Arreton, Isle of Wight. Edward HAYLES and Elizabeth UNKNOWN had the following children:
