Between 1841 and 1861 he was a Tailor in Ryde, Isle of Wight. In 1851 he employed 15 men. He purchased property on 15 Dec 1855 in Ryde, Isle of Wight. In August 1855 he lived in a rented "double brick cottage and garden" in Ryde which he bought in December of the same year. He negotiated a mortgage in August 1855. He was known as "Charles Hayles of Ryde, tailor". In 1871 he was a Tailor and Outfitter in Havenstreet, Isle of Wight. He died about 1883 in Shanklin, Isle of Wight. He was a retired outfitter.

on a mortgage as "Charles Hayles late of Ryde and now of Shanklin retired
tailor". They lived in Clarence House, Nelson Street, Ryde, Isle of Wight
in 1881. Charles and Jane lived with Sarah, Mary, Fanny, Alice and
Emilie as well as a visitor Edward H. Nools (difficult to read; aged 8; born
NK - not known). Jane ALLEN was born about 1816 in
