Samuel VERNON and Mary CALFORD
were married on 3 Jan 1851 in Parish Church, Prestwich, Manchester, Lancashire.
She was a widow and her maiden name was Harding. On 4 March 1849 she had married
Joseph Calford in St. Mary's Church, Bitton, Gloucestershire but within six months
he had died. Samuel and Mary were both widowed although Samuel was only 27 and
Mary was only 24 at the time of their marriage. He was a spinner and their residence
at the time of their marriage was Moor Hey, Oldham. His father was Thomas Vernon,
a boatman, and her father was Joseph Harding, a hatter. Samuel signed the register
but Mary left her mark. They lived in Canal Buildings, Marple, Cheshire in 1851.
In 1851, Samuel and his wife lived with his parents. They lived in Cotton Works,
Knutton, Wolstanton, Staffordshire in 1861. He and Mary lived with
their children William, Edwin, Samuel, Alfred, Elizabeth, Sarah Jane and Sarah.
They lived in Cross Heath, Knutton, Wolstanton, Staffordshire between 1871 and
1891. By 1871 he and Mary had two more children, Charles and Harry.
In 1881 Samuel and Mary lived with Elizabeth, Charles, Harry and a grandson William
Vernon (b.1876 Wolstanton; child of William Thomas Vernon). In 1891 the family
was transcribed as VERNA and Samuel and Mary had their daughter Elizabeth and
her husband Joseph Tagg (b.1854 Newcastle-Under-Lyme, Staffordshire; a Locomotive
Engine Maker) and their children Joseph (aged 7; b.26 Sep 1883), Annie W. (5),
Frederick (3) and their granddaughter Annie Vernon (Sarah's child) aged 11 living
with them.
Mary CALFORD
was born on 26 Oct 1826 in Bitton, Gloucestershire. In 1851 she was
a Cotton Weaver in Marple, Cheshire. She lived in 42 Liverpool Road,
Wolstanton, Staffordshire in 1901. Mary was a widow but her married
son Samuel lived with her and her granddaughter, Annie (21) as well as one boarder.
