Herbert was one of the six children of Robert Marsh (b.6 April 1864 Macclesfield; a groom for the Coop; d.1934) and Alice Harl (b.3 June 1862 Norwich, Norfolk; d.1942). Their children were Bertha (1892), Sarah Elizabeth (1894), Herbert 91895), Arthur (1898), Frank (1901) and Edward (1904).
