In 1851 he said that he had been born at Catil (stet) - probably Cat Hill, Hoylandswaine (but between Ingbirchworth and Penistone). He was christened on 1 Mar 1812 in Penistone, Yorkshire. In 1841 he was an Agricultural Labourer in Penistone, Yorkshire. In 1851 he was a Chemist Labourer in Finkelstreet, Wortley, Yorkshire. Between 1861 and 1881 he was a Stone Mason in Kilnhurst, Swinton, Yorkshire. He lived in 11 Station Street, Kilnhurst, Swinton, Yorkshire in 1871. John was a widower and he lived with his unmarried children Frank and Martha Jane. They employed a house keeper (Annie Taylor). He lived in 64 Victoria Street, Kilnhurst, Swinton, Yorkshire between 1881 and 1891. John lived at the home of his son Frank. In 1875 Frank had married Elizabeth Marshall and by 1881 they had four children. An apprentice stone mason also lived with them. By 1891 the family had five children. He died on 26 Jun 1891. In 1891 he was a widower living on his own means in Kilnhurst, Swinton, Yorkshire.
