10. Nathan
BUTLER was born on 1 Jan 1812 in Newsome, Huddersfield, Yorkshire.
He was christened on 28 Feb 1812 in High Street Chapel (Methodist New Connection)
Huddersfield, Yorkshire. Between 1841 and 1878 he was a Stonemason
in Newsome, Huddersfield, Yorkshire. Some stonemasons worked only
in quarries where they would carry out a range of specialist tasks such as sawing
large blocks or trimming building stones. Those who worked alone or in small
groups in town or village workshops would make everything from building blocks,
gate posts and footpath slabs, to stone troughs and church fonts. The skills
these men possessed varied greatly, some being trained craftsmen while others
were self taught jack-of-all-trades. Stonemasons were quite poorly paid. Most
would have started as building labourers and learned their trade over a period
of time. He died of enlargement of the liver (2 years certified) on 4 Sep 1878
in Newsome, Huddersfield, Yorkshire. Nathan Butler had an interest
in medical matters and obviously took a pride in his leather bound book The
English Physician Enlarged. He had his name stamped in the front and there
he also wrote Nathan Butlers Book and the date 1838 . The book
has hand coloured drawings of herbs, line drawing of parts of the body and some
301 pages of text covering such topics as herbs and their uses, Directions
for making Syrups &c and the Family Dispensatory. It seems
to be an omnibus edition which includes the Culpeppers Dispensatory
and has pencilled notes within and on the back inside cover. Such a book would
have been a big investment and a great help giving knowledge which would have
supplemented family oral tradition.
This tradition carried on down the generations via his grandson Ernest William
Burdett and great grandson Harold Burdett, both of whom made hot drops and marshmallow
ointment amongst other remedies. His great great granddaughters, Leonine Burdett
and Corinne Thomson are qualified nutritionists and well-versed in alternative
medicine.
Nathan BUTLER and Sarah BOOTHROYD were married about 1837.
They lived in Newsome, Huddersfield, Yorkshire between 1841 and 1878.
In 1841 the family were transcribed as Bulter and in 1861 as Butter. In 1871
a daughter-in-law, Annie M. Butler, aged 28 (b.1842 Scotland) and two grandsons,
Benjamin Hallowell Butler aged 3 (b.1867 Huddersfield) and John Henry Butler
aged 6 months (b.1870 Lockwood) were also staying with Nathan and Sarah. John
Henry was Mary's illegitimate son. Sarah BOOTHROYD
was born on 5 Jun 1816 in Blackhouse, Thurstonland, Yorkshire. Sarah
was one of the three daughters of Michael and Mary Boothroyd. Her sisters were
Martha (1810) and Mary (1812). She was christened on 18 Oct 1816 in High Street
Chapel (Methodist New Connection) Huddersfield, Yorkshire. She lived
in Towngate, Almondbury, Huddersfield, Yorkshire in 1881. In 1881,
Sarah's youngest children, Ruth and Sarah Ann, lived with her as did her grandson,
John Henry. In 1891 she was a Widow dependent upon her children in Newsome,
Huddersfield, Yorkshire. Nathan BUTLER and Sarah BOOTHROYD had the
