After William's death in 1849 Nancy married John Kilner later in the year.
The Kilner Family John's parents were William Kilner (c.9 March 1788 Denby son of William; bur.12 June 1862) and Jane Biltcliffe (c.22 March 1789 Cumberworth daughter of Thomas and Sarah Biltcliffe). William and Jane had married at Penistone church on 15 March 1812 and had had eight children, all christened at Denby. Their children were Ann (b.31 July 1812; c.31 July 1812), Mary (b.1 May 1815; c.27 June 1815), John (b.29 March 1818; c.6 July 1818), Sarah (b.23 January 1821; c.5 August 1821), James (b.11 July 1824; c.5 June 1825; d.1 January 1832), Charles (b. 9 December 1828; c.26 July 1829) and twin girls Elizabeth and Jane (b.3 June 1831; c.1 January 1832). William was a fancy weaver in Upper Denby in 1841 and he and Jane had their children Mary (a straw bonnet maker), John, Sarah and Charles (all fancy weavers) and Jane and Elizabeth at home. They also had their granddaughter Sarah Eliza Kilner (b.3 May 1838; c.30 September 1838 Denby; Mary's illegitimate daughter) living with them.
By 1851 William was 63 and "formerly weaver now ag. labourer" and in his household he had Charles (fancy waistcoat weaver), Eliza (house maid at home) and his granddaughter Sarah Eliza (errand girl). They lived next door to his son John and his wife Nancy.
In 1851 John was a shopkeeper and farmer in Denby and he and Nancy had her children Mary, Hannah, Rowena and Ellen with them. They had four more children, all christened at Denby Church. They were John (b.1 June 1851; c.14 September 1851), Charles William (b.4 November 1854; c.21 March 1855), Ann (b.21 February 1856; c.9 August 1857) and Jane Elizabeth (b.3 February 1860; c.8 April 1860; buried 22 August 1861 aged 16 months at St. John's Church, Denby).
It was a close-knit family as John's sister Elizabeth Kilner had married Thomas Birkhead (b.1811 Cawthorne) in 1852 and they also lived in Denby and Thomas worked as a blacksmith. Their three eldest children had all been christened in Denby church. Their children were Jane (b.22 June 1852; c.1 May 1853), Henry (b.4 March 1855; c.9 December 1855), Kilner (b.18 September 1857; c.11 July 1858) and Charles (b.1860). By 1871 the family had moved away from Denby (sometime after John (b.1862) was born. From 1871-1901 they lived in Brownhill Row, Hunshelf, Yorkshire and Thomas worked as a blacksmith and then a whitesmith. When Elizabeth was widowed she lived in the same house with her son John and daughter-in-law Clara and their family.
John and Nancy stayed in Denby and in 1871 John and Nancy had in their household her children Mary and Rowena, their children Charles and Ann plus two grandchildren, Mary E. Milnes (b.1865 Sheffield) and Ervin/Irvine (b.4 August 1870; c. 20 November 1870 Denby). Mary was the mother of Mary Elizabeth and Rowena was Ervin's mother.
In 1870 John and Nancy's elder son John had married Harriet Matthews (b.1851 Shepley). They had eight children, all christened at Denby - John (b.4 September 1870; c.20 November 1870; bur.21 June 1871), Aurette Jane (b.8 April 1872; c.21 July 1872), Charles (b.22 October 1873; c.12 September 1875), Emily (11 May 1875; c.12 September 1875), Florence (b.10 February 1877; c.1 April 1877), Nellie (b.19 November 1878; c.17 November 1878; bur.13 September 1893), Percy (b.27 January 1881; c.13 March 1881), Joseph William (b.20 January 1883; c.4 February 1883) and Elsie Marion (b.11 January 1887; c.28 August 1887). Their youngest daughter Eveline Nancy was born in 1888 in Deepcar, Yorkshire. In 1871 John and Harriet and their 7 month old son John lived with her parents (Joseph and Nancy Matthews) and her 9 siblings at their 100 acre farm at Papist House, Denby. In 1881 they lived in their own home in Denby with their children and a domestic servant. John was a grocer and a farmer of 5 acres. By 1891 they had moved from the village to Sheffield and lived at 184 Ellesmere Road. By 1901 they had moved down the road to number 91 and had two boarders.
In 1876 John and Nancy's younger son, Charles William, had married Selina Marsh (b.1856). They probably went to live with his parents as he worked with his father. In 1877 John Kilner died and was buried at St. John's Church, Denby on 18 July and Nancy continued to live with Charles William and his family until her death in 1884. By 1881 he was classed as the head of the household and had two daughters (christened in Denby) Edith (b.3 October 1877; c.31 March 1878) and Janey (b.23 November 1879; c.28 December 1879). He was a farmer of 37 acres in Denby and had a farm servant and a domestic servant living at the farm. Beatrice was born on 25 March 1882 (c.23 April 1882) and then Charles and his family went to Denby Dale to the Prospect Hotel, Wakefield Road and Charles was classed as an innkeeper when his next two children were christened:- John William (b.2 August 1884; c.30 November 1887) and Ethel (b.23 December 1886; c.30 November 1887). His youngest children were Thomas (b.31 August 1889) and Anne (b.7 June 1892). (In 1891 the family was transcribed as Kelner.) By the time these two youngest children were christened on 27 April 1901 his wife Selina had died (in 1900) and he was classed as "late innkeeper" on the Baptismal Record. However in March 1901 he and his family were still at the Prospect Hotel.
Ethel Kilner married Thomas Moxon and had two children. She died in Upper Denby in 1976.
