298. Photo John (Stocking Johnny) BURDETT was born on 20 Apr 1850 in Ingbirchworth, Yorkshire. In 1861 he was a Bobbin Winder in Ingbirchworth, Yorkshire. Between 1871 and 1881 he was a Fancy Weaver in Ingbirchworth, Yorkshire. He lived in Denby, Yorkshire in 1881. In 1881 John was a lodger at his sister Elizabeth's home. In 1891 he was a Journeyman Draper in Ingbirchworth, Yorkshire. In 1901 he was a Draper Pedlar on own account in Denby Dale, Yorkshire. John was known in the locality as “Stocking Johnny” as he went from place to place selling (mostly) stockings. He was especially well known in Bradfield.
“Stocking Johnny” was a regular visitor to places on his round. He was over six feet tall and he always wore a brimmed hat, dressed in black and carried a walking stick. He walked from home and stopped overnight at farms on the way.
He carried his goods for sale in two triangular shoulder bags. These included stockings, knickers, shoelaces, buttons, cottons, threads, pins and even remedies for coughs and colds.
He used to go to Bradfield once a month on a Wednesday and had his dinner at Mrs Helliwell’s in Syke House Lane. He ate dripping sandwiches or bread and cheese. He had his own pint mug, which was kept for his use, out of which he drank tea (without sugar or milk), but with a raw egg cracked into the tea.
The day before he was due, Mrs Helliwell’s children used to go into the woods to collect herbs for him – dandelion, yarrow, hyssop and comfrey and he would exchange the herbs for monkey nuts (peanuts in their shells). He took the herbs home to make pills, medicines and rubbing oils.
His wife, Sarah Ann, made pinafores and aprons and he used to sell them at 1s 5d (7 ½ p) each. He died of senility, influenza and bronchitis on 19 Feb 1927 in Denby Dale, Yorkshire. In his later years John's granddaughter, Hilda Holmes (nee Burdett), remembers her grandparents' home always had bunches of herbs drying on the rack and oat cakes hanging up to dry. They had a cat and a house with small window panes - one of which opened. This was an early 20th century cat flap!

John (Stocking Johnny) BURDETT and Sarah Ann BUTLER were married on 4 Feb 1891 in United Methodist Free Church, Bentley Street, Lockwood, Huddersfield, Yorkshire. They lived in Ingbirchworth, Yorkshire in 1891. In 1891 John and Sarah Ann lived two doors away from his Uncle Frank and next door the other way lived his cousin Herbert. They lived in Denby Dale, Yorkshire in 1901. In 1901, John's niece, Ada Burdett, lived with the family. Photo Sarah Ann BUTLER (daughter of Nathan BUTLER and Sarah BOOTHROYD) was born on 9 Feb 1859 in Newsome, Huddersfield, Yorkshire. In 1859 she was a Mender in Newsome, Huddersfield, Yorkshire.
