32. William BURDETT was born about 1756 in Denby, Yorkshire. He was christened on 5 Jul 1756 in St. John's Church, Denby, Yorkshire. About 1778 he was a Clothier in Cumberworth, Yorkshire. He died about 1825.

William BURDETT and Elizabeth HORN were married on 16 Feb 1778 in Almondbury, Huddersfield, Yorkshire. It seems odd that their marriage was recorded on 16 February 1778 in Almondbury as a christening of their first child, Hannah, is recorded on the same date in Cumberworth! Elizabeth HORN was born about 1762 in Cumberworth, Yorkshire. Elizabeth was the youngest child of Joseph Horn and Elizabeth Brown. Joseph and Elizabeth had married on 14 Feb 1742 at High Hoyland Church and had had eight children; Sarah (1746), Rose (1748), John (1751), Thomas (1753), Mary (1756), Joseph (1758), Hannah (1760) and Elizabeth (1762). The Horn family was among the families which could trace its roots back to the Court Rolls of the fourteenth century and whose descendants had lived around Denby and Cumberworth for generations. She was christened on 1 Jan 1763 in St. Nicholas' Church, Cumberworth, Yorkshire. She was probably the "Widow Burdett" who was allowed 4s of Dole money in the year ending 17 December 1831. William BURDETT and Elizabeth HORN had the following children:

David BURDETT was christened on 13 Feb 1780 in St. John's Church, Denby, Yorkshire. He was born about 1780 in Ingbirchworth, Yorkshire. He lived in Upper Denby, Yorkshire in 1841. David was unmarried and lived with his brother Christopher in 1841. In 1841 he was a Fancy Weaver in Upper Denby, Yorkshire. He died of dropsy on 28 Aug 1845 in The Workhouse, Denby, Yorkshire. The death was registered by Isaac Barraclough, the Workhouse Master (since at least 22 December 1843) and Overseer of the Poor (since at least 1840). The Workhouse at Denby was converted from a farm building owned by Jonathan Shaw in 1827. It was in Gunthwaite Lane and was part of a small holding called Robinson Lathe. In 1834 the Poor Law Commissioners found that there was room for twenty paupers but that the highest number that there had been at any one time was seven.
An inventory of the "goods and other property belonging to the Township of Denby in the Workhouse taken this 14th day of June 1839" showed that the furniture comprised "3 stools, 1 round table, 1 night chair and tin, 2 small chains, 1 flaskett, 1 tub and maden, 3 old chains, 2 chests, 5 bedsteads and cords, 2 boxes, 4 beds, 12 blankets, 6 sheets, 7 coverlids, 4 long bolsters and cases, 1 posnet, 2 lamb skins, 1 stort pillow, 5 spoons, 3 towels, 4 knives and two forks, coal rake, tongs and poker. Clothing - 4 new night capes."
There were six paupers listed in the 1841 Census. None was listed by the 1851 Census and so we can presume that they had been moved to Netherfield as the Penistone Union was formed in 1849 to care for the poor.
