A father dear and kind;
Death came and snatched his life away,
And we are left behind.
Swift as an arrow life doth fly,
Our time is measured to a span;
To-day we bloom, at night decay,
Our lives are but a winter's day." Samuel BURDETT and Mary Ann BEAUMONT
were married about 1865 in St. John the Evangelist Church, Denby, Yorkshire.
Mary had an illegitimate son, Arthur Beaumont (b1859, Denby), and he was brought
up as the eldest son in Samuel and Mary Ann's family. They lived in Moor Royd,
High Flatts, Yorkshire in 1871. Moor Royd was between Denby and High
Flatts. It faced south towards Thurlstone on a piece of high ground and there
were two houses together, built of millstone grit and they both had hefty hand
hewn timbers inside. There was a well near the front door and the property was
surrounded by a drystone wall. Mary Ann BEAUMONT
was born about 1835 in Denby, Yorkshire. Mary Ann was the daughter
of William Beaumont and Harriet Roberts.
The Beaumont Family:- William Beaumont of High Flatts was born in August
1783 in Fulstone, near High Flatts but, as he was from a Quaker family who did
not believe in "sprinkling" their children, he was only baptised on
14 July 1805 at the age of 21 years and 11 months when he wanted to marry in
the Established church. He was recorded in the Penistone Parish records as "William
Beaumont, son of Abraham Beaumont, a Quaker". He marrried Mary Jakeman in
1805 and they had two daughters before Mary died and was buried on 8 June 1810.
The two girls, Elizabeth (1806) and Harriet (1808), were buried on 16 August
1810. On 7 February 1814 William married Harriet Roberts (b.1794 in Coates, daughter
of Joshua and Helen Roberts). Their children were John (1814), George (1815),
William (1818), Sally (1822), Abraham (1824), Martha (1826), Esther (1828), Joseph
(1831), Ann (1834), Mary (1835), Jonathan (1838) and Wilson (1841)
In 1841 William and Harriet lived at Delph House, a farm on a rise midway between
High Flatts and Ingbirchworth. William was a farmer and he and Harriet had the
following children at home - Abraham (shoemaker), Esther, Joseph, Ann, Mary,
Jonathan and Wilson. By 1851 the family lived at High Flatts and in the household
were William (farmer), Harriet, Joseph and Wilson. William died on 25 January
1858 at High Flatts and he was buried in the Quaker burial ground at High Flatts.
Harriet continued to run the farm and in 1861 she lived with Mary Ann and Wilson
and Mary Ann's illegitimate son, Arthur. On 20 December 1869 Harriet died in
High Flatts and she was buried in the Quaker burial ground on Charistmas Eve.
Her children all married local folk.
John (1814-1873) married Mary Ann Fisher and farmed at Birds Edge farm; George
(1815-1891) married Maria Poppleton and farmed at High Flatts;
William (1818-1896) married Maria's sister Mary and they farmed at High Flatts;
Abraham (1824-1861) married Hannah Wood and farmed at Peat Pits Farm, Bradfield;

Brighouse and farmed there;

worked as a general labourer;
Ann (1834-) went into service, initially in Denby and then in Marsh near Huddesfield;
Jonathan (1838-1849) and Wilson (1841-1873) were both buried in the Quaker burial
ground at High Flatts.
Now back to Mary Ann.... She died about 1876 in Denby, Yorkshire.
Mary Ann died a month after her youngest daughter, Mary Ann, was born, presumably
as a result of complications after the birth. She was buried on 28 Jul 1876
in St. John the Evangelist Church, Denby, Yorkshire. Samuel BURDETT
and Mary Ann BEAUMONT had the following children:
