37. Henry BURDET was born about 1530 in Denby, Yorkshire. He was mentioned in a deed on 3 Oct 1573 in Haigh, Kexborough, Yorkshire. "Henry Burdett of Hayghe, Yks, gent, son and heir apparent of Aillmer Burdett esq. is bound to Ailmer Burdett, of Denby Hall, Yks, his father in 50/0/0 to keep the arbitration order of equal date. 3 Oct 1573. Copy of abritration award: Thomas Gargrave of Nostell, Yks, kt and John Lacye of Breerley, Yks, esq. are the arbitrators in a dispute between Aimer Burdett of Denby Yks, esq and Henerye Burdett, his son and heir apparent, and Richard Burdett, Nicholas Burdett and John Burdett, younger sons of Aimer Burdett, concering lands in Denbye, Clayton, Ingburchworth, Skelmanthorp and Langsett. 23 Jan 1573/4.". In 1574, during his father's final weeks, Henry had been forced to endure the lands, rents and entitlements due to him as his father's heir, being in part packaged off to his younger brothers Nicholas, Richard and John. He was powerless to change these deeds.
The family fortunes were seriously weakened when Henry Burdet, on his father's death, had to make the same payment as Aymer for his estates at Denby to Francis Burdet of Birthwaite, his cousin. A bond dated 14th April 1575 confirms the payment of £1000. This was a huge sum of money and must have had a crippling effect on the family finances. Henry was legally bound to honour the condition agreed to by his father in 1545.
Archbishop Grindel's Visitation of 1575 notes that "Henrye Burdet, generosus, kepeth and harbureth in his howse one Dowsabell Casson who, being never maryed, hath had and brought furth a child and now is suspected to be with childe again." When Elizabeth died Henry had taken a mistress who helped keep his house and look after the younger children. Dowsabell was much younger than Henry and was attracted to him by his wealth and power. He did not marry her because she was of a much lower class.
In 1584, a Spanish invasion of England was expected in December and a council of war decided that all private gentlemen with a certain yearly income must take up arms or find another man to take their place. Perhaps Henry bought his way out or perhaps he was too old to be involved.
The Visitation of Yorkshire in 1585 states: Henericus Burdett de Denby, ar., is among the "Liberi tenentes" of Staincross. (ar = armiger)
He was the recipient of a Bond in 1585. Bond in 200 marks by John Moore of Northe Leverton, co Notts, to Henry Burdett of Denby Hall in the parish of Penniston, esq, for the performance of covenants contained a pair of indentures dated the same day, being a Bargain and Sale by the said John. In 1592, Henry had to pay 57s 4d to the Vicars of Silkstone for the upkeep and repairs to Silkstone Church.
By 1598 Henry and his brood lived at Walton. He sold land in 1599. The Yorkshire Feet of Fines records that "Henry Burdett, esq. sold to Nicholas Mokeson and Ann his wife, a Messuage with lands in Thurgoland."

He died about 1601. Inquisition Post Mortem held at Barnsley in respect of Hen Burdett late of Denby, esq, deceased. In his Will of 19 February 1601 he made no mention of his legitimate children but left everything to Dowsabell's illegitimate children. .
