4. William
BURDET was born about 1120 in Lowesby, Leicestershire. William
fought at the siege of Lincoln in support of Stephen in the Civil War.
In 1159, William founded the Benedictine Alvecote Priory in Warwickshire to expiate
the rash killing of his wife.
A steward had falsely accused her of infidelity during William's absence in the
Holy Land during a Crusade. However, the steward had actually solicited the wife's
affections in vain in his absence. It was said that William was a valiant and
devout man and the Knight, believing the slander, had stabbed her. The Priory
is now in ruins but when the Priory Church was still standing the founder's grave
was in an arch of the wall on the North side covered by a plain free stone
curiously embossed with the sculpture of a large cross.
William BURDET
and Alice BASSET were married. Alice BASSET
was born in Colston Bassett, Nottinghamshire. William BURDET and
Alice BASSET had the following children:
5 | i. | Richard BURDET was born in Rand, Fulnetby, Lincolnshire. Charters for the holding of markets still remain. On 23 August 1301 a charter to hold a market on Wednesdays at his manor in Lowesby was granted by King Edward I to William Burdet and on the same day he was granted a charter to hold a market at his manor on the feast of St. Michael (29 September) and on the Feast of St. Philip and St. James (1 May). |
